A cargo vessel carrying a boat load of VW Group vehicles catches fire and sinks to the bottom of the ocean and now all production has stopped because of no wiring harness shipments. It looks like those who placed custom orders will be waiting awhile.

They will need to find an alternate supplier QUICK!

I just signed up for Cares by Volvo (subscription service), getting their XC90. You can cancel after 5 months, and keep for as long as 24 months. 1,250 miles a month. I will bounce in and out of this subscription until my R1S comes :)
Interesting, just like regular subscription? Pay as you go. Never heard of this. Whats the cost, I know it varies, but just to get an idea.

It is $1,100 a month and includes insurance, maintenance, tire protection, etc. Just like a normal lease (it is essentially a 24 month lease that you can turn in after 5 months with no penalty, or keep).

The interesting thing is that a standard 24 month lease (i.e. no flexibility), not subscription based, on the exact same vehicle, is $75 per month more expensive (with a down payment of $2,500!), and you have to provide your own insurance...

It works for me because summer in Florida is unpredictable weather wise (too much wind, heat, and rain for Vespa), then I get rid of the car when we get back to normal Florida weather. I will do something like 7 months with a car, then no car (share with girlfriend + Vespa) and save money for 5 months, rinse and repeat as needed until R1S shows up!

It is an outstanding option for someone in my position.

It is not available in ever state. I wanted to do it but NC does not allow but was a good deal.

I pre-ordered an R1S in Sept 2019 and my delivery window was Oct-Dec 2022. Looks like another Christmas without a Rivian.
Weird, I ordered R1S April 2020 and have July/Sept 2022 window. Wonder how I have sooner delivery than you?

You will likely get the credit because Lightening has started and there is a slow phase out so the full credit is available within that quarter when they meet 200000 units so that can add a couple of months on. Then it halves for six months.
Is that 200,000 built or sold? What happens if your VIN is built in that quarter but you take possession outside the quarter? How do you know for sure if you are in (with full credit) or out before you sign the papers?

I received my reinstatement confirmation this week, with an estimated delivery of Feb 2023.
You got a specific month? Not first half of 23? Are you sure you are not confusing the “February 28, 2022” date reference in the email?

Porsche has stopped ALL production due to wiring harnesses being produced in Ukraine becoming suddenly unavailable.

This is just the beginning. With BA.2 kicking booty in China and their shutdowns, we are going to find out what other parts will be causing delays. More delays means stretching the company burn rate.

I wonder how many of us there are subscribing to Cares by Volvo and awaiting their Rivians. I too have an XC90 the wife is hauling the kids around in until we can go all electric (w an R1S LE joining my Model 3 performance). The ability to walk away after five months is a great feature (plus insurance).

It is not available in all states. For example North Carolina is not one that Cares is allowed to operate in currently.

"Maybe they can figure out a way to build up as many vehicles as they can and figure out a way to ration the chips they have and offer essentially "reduced featured" vehicles for those who would be willing to accept them. NO IDEA if that would even be possible....but if it was, I would accept a reduced function (if safe) vehicle with the promise of plugging in the missing chips when the chips are available."
Looks like Ford just announced they are doing just this very thing. NO REAR SEAT CLIMATE CONTROL FOR YOU!....at least not right now. Seems like a great oportunity to go through the vehicle and really take stock of what is needed and what is a bell/whistle that can come along later. That auto shut-off thing in my current sedan could go away forever and I would love it. That an the lane warning system. Those nuisance items would be first on the my list. Hopefully Rivian can do something similar.

This is a very bad idea for their first impression.

I wouldn’t buy anything that needed an IC added in at the service center level. That’s terrifying.

Why "terrifying"?
At it's most basic level.. straighten IC pins, align pins with socket holes, press IC into socket. Done. I've built many, many devices that require pressing IC's into sockets... not difficult at all. On a scale of 1-10, probably a 3 at most.

How much PCB work would you say a dealer tech does after they’re out of school?

it’s not the complexity thst is concerning. ?

They will need to pick an choose what to leave in and leave out. AND it would be an optional thing (in my mind). The first impression would be exactly what I am asking for. In theory the customer would not be surprised at all. "Would you like to go to the head of the line and take the vehicle with these thing to be addressed later or would you like to wait until all the chips arrive on shore or are made on-shore?" It would be user preference, in my mind. I would not judge someone who wants to wait. Personally, there are a few things that, if they deleted them, I might not even want to add them back in. Using the Ford model: Rear seat climate control. NONE of us had that when we were growing up. I don't even have young people that ride in the car with me anymore. If that was never installed I would not care. Everyone's use case is different. Just thinking of ways to get more truck on the road to we extremely thirsty customers.
