We cannot get our 2025 R1T into drive or any other ‘gear’. Cannot drive it. We have done a ‘soft’ reset, and a ‘hard‘ reset. We also put it in sleep mode, but nothing helps. Screen says it’s ‘ready’, but nothing happens. Anyone had anything like this?

Is your Bluetooth on your phone connected? It may not detect it. Try a key card?

Tried key FOB; tried phone. Nothing works, but thank you for trying.

Rivian had us do the soft reset, followed by the hard reset, followed by sleep mode for 45 minutes. They are clueless. So, we will get a rental car tomorrow and our R1T will be towed on Wednesday. We were just hoping somebody might have a similar experience and resolution short of having the car towed away.

No warnings whatsoever. We haven’t driven it anywhere the past 2 days. Husband went out to move it out of the driveway, and…nothing. Screen lights up, says ‘ready’, but won’t go into drive or reverse.

A couple of random ideas to try to maybe toggle the software out of some mode it is stuck in

change drive mode

Change ride height

Hold shift lever in Drive position for a few seconds

make sure all doors are closed. Maybe open and close them all just to cycle them.

wow, very sorry to hear this, have not seen anything like it. Please let us know how it gets resolved. Rivian will take care of it, even if it’s frustrating.

THIS JUST HAPPENED to me but eventually the hardware reset resolved it. I ran quick errand, then had time to kill before going somewhere else. I got in the truck and did some reading. The R1T (I think) went to sleep. I had the AC off and the window open. I went to put it in drive and it was insisting I needed to press the Brake, which I was indeed pressing.

Did a software reset and, nope, could not shift out of Park. So stupid. The vehicle has 1 job - DRIVE.

Fortunately after a hardware reset I was able to get it into gear. Literally.

At least, presumably, a diagnostic log was sent to Rivian with the hardware reset and they can prevent this in a future release. Never encountered this since taking delivery in 2023.

@jodyz Maybe try another shot at Software reset followed by Hardware reset if you’ve only tried it 1-2x. Don’t go crazy though :)

Just curious, do you have multi factor drive turned on? If not try cycling it on and off to see if it might be confused.

I can think of a couple of things that could cause this behavior, but most would display some sort of message. But maybe something like the brake position sensor is broken, or the stalk switch is broken?

Regardless, I don't think it's likely you'll find a solution in the forum. The best thing to do is to have Rivian look at it. I would call back and see if they can schedule a mobile technician rather than a tow - my guess is that the mobile service will at least be able to track it down and determine if it needs to be towed back or not - that could save you a lot of trouble. I think the default response to "my car won't go" is to tow it in, and that may be appropriate if your battery is dead or something, but this seems more like a broken switch where the car is running properly but just not aware that you're trying to drive it.

Please post again when they determine what the cause is and let us know what happened.

Make sure you press and hold your name on the center screen to capture and send the diagnostic capture to Rivian. Technically the hard reset should do it but more data means more for them to work with.

I assume you’ve tried locking the vehicle and walking away, shutting down all Rivian apps on all phones and allowing it to sleep. And that you’ve tried every manner of “reset” beyond the soft and hard resets such as the trick of pressing the frunk button 10 times or plugging and unplugging the vehicle. Literally try every single thing you can think of. Open and close all the doors. Lock and unlock. Try the keycard. Try the fob. Make sure the vehicle has a 4G LTE connection. Power cycle the Bluetooth on your phone etc.

Oh and another obvious thing. You cannot put it into gear while the vehicle is plugged in.
