Had it on in the back ground while working.

Think this particular video/test didn't really do much. I think it was a 15 min charge from 10% only. So only thing it really evaluated was how quick and how much each battery would charge in the allotted time.

Was similar, but not the same. Don't think most people who opt for a max pack are really looking at this particular application when choosing the extra range.

Max pack, in theory, can spend slightly more in the 10-80% range or 10-70% range depending on how long you want your charging stops.

The benefit should be during longer road trips with multiple charging stops where. The longer the road trip... Again theory at this point... The more benefit you will see time wise. In some cases max pack may have just enough extra to save a 10 min charging stop all together on a shorter trip.

$10,000 is a lot of money and while I wouldn't opt for the upgrade... I think it's important to outline the possible benefits and let the buyer decide for his/herself.

If I can save ten minutes per trip, 20 mins round trip, and I take a dozen trips per year that's 4 hours saved. Then there is also the added energy for off grid camping and such.

After hearing some discussions and watching this, kinda happy I didn’t hold out for the max pack. It wouldn’t really have done much for me.

I like the Out of Spec videos as they really cover things that most others don’t. I do wish there was a recap of the pertinent information at the end though, maybe a table showing some stats from the video and a better recap discussion on those.

This still leaves the mystery of where a lot of the Max Pack’s extra range comes from. The battery isn’t that much bigger and it’s not more efficient. So, is Rivian just fudging the EPA numbers? Is the Max Pack somehow more efficient at slower speeds?
It's extra efficiency was logged in the city cycle. I suspect it's related to motor efficiency when both are engaged.

It would be an ethical lapse, and borderline fraud, for Rivian to report range numbers which stem from a city mode range boost!

Buyers are expecting a range increase in Max Pack to help them on road trips, but they're only going to benefit from the tiny increase in usable capacity. Shame on you, Rivian.

I like OOS videos. I agree that the option isn't worth $10k to me, especially on long road trips where I would only gain about 40 miles of range on first leg.

It's a bummer. It's also my frustration with the way EPA describes range on EVs.

I get it though, it gets a 400 mile EV for both the r1s and r1t with the same pack setup. I think it's a net benefit to offer it for the r1s, it's just not as much of a bump as people were hoping for in the driving conditions they were hoping for.

I've said it before and since it's kinda relevant to these responses, I'll say it again. MAX pack needs to replace large pack for $1k more than the large pack upcharge. Unless you want to drive 300 miles comfortably one way without needing to charge fast at the end, then it's nearly pointless, especially for 10k more than large.

I took it that this is the point of the video. If the "energy density" of max pack is better you should see better efficiency, but they didn't. And actual charge curve was a little better on large pack. Especially disappointing to me because if max pack is larger shouldn't you charge faster longer? At least I would have guessed so.

This is a much better video on charging curve of max pack:

According to this video: from 10% state of charge, max pack accumulates 192 miles of more range 11 minutes faster than a large pack.

(As said earlier, 15 min of charging time is insufficient to determine anything)

Kyle's video are usually informative, this one was a big "so what?". He could of summarized this dubious test in 3 minutes. Max is about initial range, full stop. The bit about normal road tripping about driving over 80 in the middle of the winter is a bit of a stretch for us east of the Rockies.
Pretty normal anywhere west of Kansas City all the way to California actually.

I had hoped this would be a full range test, but I guess I should've read the title of the video more closely.

I'm one of those people who wants to be able to drive to the next city away, which is 250-300 miles in my case, at 70 mph with no charging stops. So I'm happy with my max pack decision, but I understand why a lot of people feel disappointed with what we ended up getting.
