i mentioned this in the comment of the video but will duplicate here. does anyone know if the floor where he put the tire sturdy/strong? any idea what weight that floor is rated to load? id be concerned having a 90lbs tire there going offroading, or even normal driving on rough roads, where the back end is bouncing up and down.

I would be floored if it is anywhere near problematic.

Great question but since the floor will support the compact spare, I’m sure it’s sitting on the frame and capable. I will say, even though you can hear how snug it fits on the sides of the tire, that ratchet strap is imperative, I’d even thread it through the wheel and over the top so that it doesn’t accidentally tilt backwards and hit either the rear hatch or glass off-roading. But it does look like it won’t block your rear view mirror since it sits down.

I guess "fits" is a relative word. Seeing the title, I thought somehow it was fitting under the floor like the compact spare. At least this is an option though.

A nice option for R1S owners when needed. Thanks to the @opnwide and @Pixelshot.

So for literally years, some (many?) prospective buyers have stated their concern about the R1S not having a location for a full spare.

Why in the world would "customer engagement" Tony not at some point present this as an option for certain use cases? Does anyone at Rivian actually use these vehicles?

Another missed opportunity for "positive" news. Something no company can have too much of.

Thanks Ralph. Yes I’m excited to use this option a few times a year. I think this cannot be an official Rivian-endorsed option most likely due to the legal implications of someone not ratchet-strapping it down properly in an accident etc.

And it clearly still doesn't support a full size spare. What's shown is only intended to be used if you need to use your compact spare and need to transport the flat. You lose all your storage space in the back with the full size loaded that way. Anyone trying to claim this is sufficient has their blinders on. For a vehicle meant to be an off-road adventure vehicle I maintain this is a huge failing on Rivian's part and why I went with the R1T over the R1S, which arguably would've fit my life better otherwise.

I like it, still better than putting it on a glass roof, or the pain of a swing out. I see in your other thread you have a custom cover for it, any details?

After getting a nightmare flat on my Tesla in the middle of the Arizona desert one time that took me 28 hours to get home from (without the car), I swore I'd never go on a long trip without a spare again. I bought an extra wheel/tire and took it with me on long trips. Same reasoning for someone going off-roading with an R1S. The small spare won't allow you to continue your off-roading. It's simply additional cargo in the cargo area of the vehicle. In this case, the floor recess allows it to use a little less of the cargo space available, which is a positive.
