Planning for Snow Tires

Thinking ahead to winter. I have the 21-in wheels on R1S dual motor large pack. I am generally happy with this setup, except in snow. There are no snow tires for this size wheel so I'm going to have to buy a new set of wheels for snow tires anyway. The tires I'm looking at are available both to fit the 20-in and 22-in rims. All things considered, which (20 or 22") would likely provide the least hit to range for the vehicle? Also, I think I saw once that Rivian was theoretically willing to sell just a set of wheels rather than the wheel tire combo that's listed on the Rivian gear web page. Does anyone have any information on that? Haven't reached out yet to my guide.

I ran the Blizzacks on my R1T with 20’s, this last winter. They were awesome! Very smooth, quiet running, with great traction. Never seemed to slip, even a bit. As best I could tell, they did not have much, if any, negative impact on range.

My Hakka LT3s on 20s are absolutely incredible. I didn’t even realize how great they were on normal dry pavement until I put my ATs back on this spring.

Also thinking ahead for winter and would like 20" wheels. What are even the wheel options? The only affordable-ish option I know of that you can just buy new is the MSW Type 52, about $200/wheel. The other one is to find the mystical Dodge Ram 2363 wheels.

The range difference between the original 20 and the original 22 is going to be insignificant.

If you can get hold of the new 22's with arrow covers, those might provide slightly better range. But they are so new, no one has confirmed if the impact is significant. Assuming you bought the 21's because you like the way they looked the new areo 22s may also match aesthetic preferences too.

I would avoid the Dodge Ram wheels if your primary concern is range. The offset is wider than the OEM fit. Some people like the look of wheels pushed out, but there is a reason why Rivian designed the OEM wheels with a narrower offset. Range. Keeping the wheels tucked in as much as possible hides them from the wind and reduces the amount of drag they cause.

It isn't a guide thing. It is a service center thing. To get started, use the app to submit a service ticket requesting wheels.

Pricing seems to depend on the mood of the people at the service center that day and the price I was quoted for wheels without tires was nearly the same price as the gear shop wheels with tires. Other people have been offered better deals though, so it is still worth asking.

Gen 2 vehicles are just now becoming available, so there are no/few gen 2 wheels floating around yet. But by the time you need snow tires, you might be able to find some lightly used gen 2 aero 22s for sale from someone switching to aftermarket wheels.

Nokian makes the best snow tires for EVs, and IMO, the best snow tires. Last season, I put on the WRG5 “all weather” tires on my MX and they performed almost as good as blizzak in our last May storm of 26” of snow. This is my 3-season tire for living in the snowy Tahoe area. For winter, I run the studded Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV. Both of these tires get excellent range for EVs. I am looking forward to doing the same with my new R1S. 20” for winter for sure. I am still researching the new aero 22’s to see if there is any appreciable range difference compared to the 20” WRG5

I have the 21's as well, and after reading reviews, decided to just get a set of 20 inch wheels with nokian hakkas. EVSportline sells them as a set, they come full inflated, balanced, and with tpms (add it as a free option) for less than Rivian sells a set of tires/wheels.. With the bottle jack they sell as well, I was able to switch them out myself last December (and back to the 21s a few weeks ago). Sure, it's more upfront cost, but it'll hopefully extend the life of both sets, and mean I can do it myself. Use the drop down to change to different tire options.

I grabbed a set of Rivian 22” rims and Nokian Tyre Hakkapeliitta 10 snow tires. Hakkapeliittas are more than likely the best snow tires in the market and the 10s are at the top of the class.

We bought Rivian 22" rims, with Michelin X-Ice Snow 275/50R22 from Costco.

Before you do this, make sure YOU have pucks, and check with the proposed Costco to make sure the Tire Manager and staff are 100% comfortable with servicing Rivians.

The Costco Tire nearest our Service Center (not our local Costco) chickened out at the last minute. I respected that, but it meant we had to stuff four boxed wheels, four 33" diameter tires, and a weekend's worth of cargo into the R1S and the Bolt and take everything to Discount Tire in Hillsboro OR (where they did a great job).

My local Costco Tire Manager started out moderately confident, mostly because of general reading and years of experience -- but what got him to 100% confidence was seeing emailed Rivian-specific instructions from JackPucks manufacturer @Mark_AZR1T (https://jackpucks.com/).

Regardless of what you choose for tires, I highly recommend @Mark_AZR1T and the JackPucks product. Designed (and I believe still made) in USA. Mark keeps his commitments. I wouldn't buy pucks from anyone else!

While the Dodge wheels work well, if you really want Rivian-official, contact your local service center directly, they'll sell you bare wheels.

The tires are the biggest killer of efficiency, not the wheel/tire *size*. So 22 vs 20 shouldn't make a big difference. But for winter ride comfort, more sidewall is better, so I'd go with the 20s.
