Still in the used market and trying to discern how prevalent this issue is. Secondarily, does a turtled Rivian suffer increased risk of turtling again after the initial issue is resolved? If i'm shopping in the used market, do I have any way of knowing if a Rivian has turtled before?

Thanks for your participation.
'24 R1T Dual Motor (non-performance) with Large pack and 20in AT.

I was having an issue with rear motor engage/disengage. On the way home from vacation, 200mi from home, I went to pass a car and got a LOUD thunk from the rear end. Recieved "turtle mode" on the dash, but was able to continue home at 70+mph in front wheel drive only mode. Called Rivian service, they setup an appointment for the next day, where I drove it 45mi to the nearest service center. They "recalibrated" the rear motor disconnect under warranty. I still get absurdly awful "clunks" with engagement, but no "Turtle Mode" since. Probably 5k miles that way now. Rivian says "they all do that", but it didn't do this when I bought it.

So, yes I've had it. I haven't had it since. Don't buy a dual motor truck.

My R1T turtled back in 2023 and after their first attempt to fix it, it turtled as soon as I pulled into my driveway. I turned around and drove it right back. It turned out to be a module which they replaced and it hasn’t been an issue since. Though I suspect my front tires took a hit being in front wheel drive only for those several months.

I’m sorry you don’t like it. But every luxury car brand I’ve ever owned has provided a loaner - many will even do so for the day. At this price point most expect a loaner for an extended repair. Rivian is not positioning itself as Toyota, not that there is anything wrong with Toyota, but it’s not a luxury car brand.

Enterprise tries to put people in EVs and/or nicer rentals, but it’s not possible with the number of folks picking up rentals for Rivian repairs daily from them. As stated above - I’ve had a smoke smelling Highlander, Murano, and Mitsubishi (many more rentals than you’ve had in 4 decades evidently, which is another topic). None are adequate replacements for a 100k vehicle.
I don't think the price determines whether it is a luxury brand. Loaded Ford F150s and Silverados cost as much as a Rivian. I don't consider Rivian a luxury brand. Not that it matters. I'm fine with the rental and the occasional loaner. Each to his own.

The model-specific results are interesting. So far, 26% of R1T owners report experiencing a turtling issue compared to only 11% of R1S owners.

Got the turtle once about 2 weeks after I got my 2023 R1S. It drove fine but they told me not to drive it more than necessary so drove it to the service center and left it there until they could fix it. They said that a connector had come loose. That was almost 2 years ago and no problems since then. Rivian provided a rental while my R1S was in the shop.

Might be that most T owners on here bought them several years ago, while most S owners bought more recently. Maybe

Well the issue with these polls is you can only vote once, our R1S has never gone into turtle mode, while our R1Ts have done so a total of three times.

As others have said turtle mode is not an issue in and of itself, but the R1 self protecting against a potential issue. One of the issues below is certainly T specific, but the other could have been on an S just as easily.

Our turtle mode incidents:
1) driver side gear tunnel door not closing correctly. Fixed by SC.
2) rear motor disconnect calibration issue (tri motor) x2 - both times resolved in the short term via a full reboot (ie ‘disco pose’ reset), and then fixed by SC.

The average R1T is older than the average R1S.

Interestingly, there's no place in this poll for dual-Rivian owners like us. Neither has turtled for us, but the R1S has more miles driven so I answered for that.

Best wishes!

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending how you look at it, I’ve had turtle mode twice, but both times resolved without any service visit and both I reported in a future service visit to make sure everything was okay and everything checked out fine (no good explanation of WHY it went to turtle mode 🤦‍♂️)

First time I was driving in snow and suspect a sensor got clogged up or something. A pull over and hard reset fixed it right up.

Second time was just a few weeks ago while towing a trailer up the mountain to my house. Unfortunately the turtle mode limited me to 3mph but at least I was only 0.8 miles from home and in the neighborhood. Battery was down to 5% but still doesn’t make sense why the motor was hot and went into turtle mode, on the last 0.8 miles of a flawless 70 mile drive. 🤔

Turtles twice at the end of charging session wile on the road.. Was tracing I 15 between Richfield Utah and las Vegas - IT was HOT outside +100 // charaging locations were Tesla superchargers with adapter charging from about 15 -80% // Car (2024 R1s) Tutled due to battery being two warm - it was around 130 degrees F . Once i stopped charging - limped to a shady spot a the battery cooled to < 125 funciton went back to normal and Turtle mode resolved itself. This happened twice both at A tesla super charger and once at a Rivian Adventure network charger (Las Vegas)
