Poll: Operational Sun Roof

Would you like an option for an operational sunroof or some equivalent (e.g., removable panels)?)

Hey Everyone,

There are a number of additional features I would like, but something that sticks out to me is the lack of an operational sunroof. I have this in my ‘99 4Runner and use it all the time. It seems odd that a luxury vehicle would lack this.

What level of interest do you have in this feature? Would you be willing to pay an additional premium for it?

Also, I recently received the “configure email but I’m delaying to see what new features come with the 2024 refresh/update.

I understand Rivian employees view these forums so I wanted to put this out there in addition too/separate from the wishlist thread that’s out there. Thanks!

There were some prototypes of removable roofs that never made it to production.

If you search here you'll find various threads discussing it.

You mention "It seems odd that a luxury vehicle would lack this." Rivian is not postitioned or marketed as a luxury vehicle.

I have a power sunroof in my 2010 Avallanche. I rarely use it. I would prefer that my R1S had a sollid roof.

Honestly, I don't really even want the glass roof we have. All of the vehicles I have owned in the last 30 years have all had a moonroof (because it wasn't an option to remove) that I never used . Now I have a panoramic glass roof that also was not an option. Living in a major city, I prefer to have something between me and the noise and pollution of the outside world so I rarely even roll the side windows down except to swipe my employee badge to get through the security gate at work.

But that's just me, and you asked.

I agree fixed glass roofs are stupid but this isn't a new idea from Rivian, its more of a trend in the industry and plenty of 'luxury' vehicles are following it.

No interest from me in Rivian developing this option... never gave the operable roofs much use in my other vehicles. YMMV

I prefer it like it is now, but request they add a power sunshade.

I enjoy the added light the glass roof provides. I never open windows or sunroofs. It lets the new car smell out. I keep mine bottled up inside :)

Yes, I would make use of sun/moon, whatever it is called glass/roof.

I'm firmly in the operational sun roof camp. I was originally going to wait until Rivian had the removable roof option until it went away. I really miss it. I have used sun roofs regularly on every vehicle I have owned. I love them. The one in my old 2012 Model S was pretty great and the one in my current 2014 Jeep Cherokee is impressive as well and gets regular use.

I don't see Rivian providing this option unfortunately, but I'd personally love it.

I would actually prefer no glass roof at all (operational or not), but I know I'm in the minority with that.

Maybe adding a poll would make this easier to show Rivian what you are trying to show them?

Yes, a moon roof and back window like my Ram. BIggest items I miss. The no open back window still blows my mind for a truck.
This holds true for me as well. Have both operable moon roof and back window in my 2017 Ridgeline, and make frequent use of both (in Florida) - including extending long 2-4s, etc. through the back window opening on hardware store runs. Given the choice I would prefer a solid roof in a R1T over the Rivian glass roof.

I think there is a potential for aftermarket products here. Enough of us want a solid roof that I think someone could develop paintable panels (plastic, fiberglass, carbon fiber, etc.) which any automotive glass shop could put in place of the factory glass roof panels. This would be the first, lowest cost, and possibly highest demand version.

Then it would be possible to add an operable sunroof panel to the aftermarket solid roof panel. I don’t know if something generic could be used or if another manufacturer’s panel could fit inside the existing glass opening.

Finally, it could even be possible for someone to use the solid roof replacement panel as the foundation of a removable roof panel for people who want the option. A Webasto-type may satisfy a lot of folks because of the relatively large opening and the self-storing nature.

Just my $0.02
