++ on the no-glass option. Glass roofs add so much weight. I'm biased in that I had an old vehicle with a leaky sunroof so always avoided them after that.

I also hoped the dynamic roof would reduce heat buildup but was told by my guide it wouldn't. Even if they don't promote it as reducing heat, I believe they should note that it will NOT. I don't blame anyone believing the dynamic roof would keep it cooler.

I saw one other thread discussing wildshield tinting as well as the t-sportsline roof liner as good solutions. I assume tinting costs thousands so maybe will start with the latter.
Tinting costs are around $250 but my tint guy refused to do it because he thinks it could trap heat and damage the glass. His theory but I didn't argue. I bought a roof liner (~$80) and it makes a difference.

Bang for the buck. I believe the standard panoramic roof with a 2 piece SUV sunshade is your best bet.

I would 100% opt for Rivian premium audio over Dynamic roof.

I just wish Rivian had a no-glass option. The glass breaks if you as much as fart near it. It either melts what little hair most of us have or bakes bald heads. Most of us don't enjoy it because we're driving. Our 2-year old kid and/or dog could give two $hit$ about it. Gen1 owners have to resort to buying cheap looking shades. Now to add insult to injury, Gen2 owners are getting blinded by the light. So, ya I'm not a fan of the glass roof.
My shade looks good. Not alcantara, but it comes out over winter and then I can enjoy the sun.

I’ll repeat my standing comment on the roof glass breakage and heat issues - when is a 3rd party going to make a carbon fiber replacement?

I take delivery of my R1S in one week. I had been keeping an eye on shop inventory...obsessively...for a while. I was intrigued by the dynamic glass roof and initially, i wanted it, but could not find one in the shop that had the other things that were more important to me (PDM, Max, prem. audio). I even had a guide helping me keep an eye out for me for a config that had my items and the dynamic glass roof. Meanwhile, i dug and dug and researched and researched to find out as much as i could about it to decide if it would be a big deal to me. I found out that regardless of it on or off it had a 'milky' tint, and didn't really work like the 787 dynamic tint, meaning it didn't 'shade' really from light to dark. I decided that was not what i wanted and the standard panoramic glass was actually what i wanted. I pre-ordered the pop-in shades from EVBase instead if the sun becomes a bother. All that to say...i was almost there in getting a vehicle with a dynamic glass roof, and....I wouldn't have liked it either. But from what i've heard from Rivian guides and others videos and this forum, what you're describing seems to match how it's intended to function.

This was always my fear with the dynamic glass "feature" - when it's "off" you have a mediocre-looking panoramic glass roof and when it's "on" you have a really bright, mostly opaque sun shade. By trying to incorporate (admittedly) cool, but gimmicky tech, Rivian has diminished the "wide-open" feel that their Gen1 panoramic glass roof provides while at the same time providing less sun protection and shade than a cheap aftermarket insert. It's convenience and technology at the expense of quality and functionality... kind of the reverse of popular engineering mantras "Form follows function" and "the best part is no part."

I ordered the dynamic glass with the intent that it could limit how hot the inside gets on sunny days, sounds like that won't be the case. wish they just had a pull across sun shade (not third party) - will see when I get it.

My BMW ix has the same dynamic roof. It's an expensive joke on that car and more of a parlor trick to show people thar it can go slighlty white opaque and blur things out like people do on Zoom calls. Most of the time I have to press the button since I can't tell when looking up if it's really in the "darker" tinting. But, hey, it beaps when it changes and people go cool!

i'll be anxiously awaiting my Gen2 R1S to return from rhe SC after 3 weeks of medhanical repairs down to replacement of nearly all modules and parts associated with the new heat pump. My front end is being put back on today after complete removal of bumber and fan assembly.

The panaormic glass, like many Tesla owners have disxovered, will get ceramic tinted for heat relfection. There were two Teslas including the new Cyberjunk getting their roofs tinted while I was in the shop a few weeks ago.

i think you are fighting an uphill battle on a piece of technology that's yet to be perfected by anyone.
Any updates on your repairs? Anxiously awaiting some positive news - your neighbor :)

I just took delivery on Saturday of an R1S with the Dynamic Roof. It was probably 80F outside and a clear sunny day. Definitely a significant difference in heat transmitted through the roof glass between the 2nd and 3rd rows.

While sitting in the 2nd row I didn't really notice the overhead heat too much, but after moving to the third row I instantly noticed it was quite a bit hotter. Holding my hand up to the glass in both rows also showed there was a large difference.

We are getting the back roof tinted because of this but leaving the large dynamic roof alone since it seems to reject heat well enough as is. The back roof is small so hopefully no cracks! :D

Edit:
Also, since the dynamic glass seems to block so much heat, I am wondering how it is different than tinting the roof? In this case it’s just done by Rivian, so if it cracks I guess it’s on them? But makes me think in reality it should be ok to tint the roof.

Congrats on your new R1S! It’s great to hear the dynamic roof is doing a solid job in the second row as it should be. The difference you noticed between the second and third rows highlights a downside in the setup. The smaller rear roof section, which is about 36% the size of the large roof glass, doesn’t have the dynamic feature, so it continues to let in heat and glare despite the large glass roof doing its job. This is a huge issue because it really undermines the effectiveness of the dynamic glass option they offer, especially when it comes to keeping the entire cabin comfortable.

When it comes to the milky effect you may have heard from others, this is actually caused by Rivian’s decision to sandwich the smart film between the layers of glass. This setup will amplify the issue, as the magnification effect through the two layers of glass will distort light and create that cloudy appearance when the glass is supposed to be clear. It would be best to have the smart film on the interior of the vehicle, not between the layers, as would look much clearer and avoids those visibility problems others are experiencing.

As for tint, it does a good job of blocking heat while you’re driving, but when the vehicle is parked, it will trap more heat inside. This happens because the tint absorbs heat (darker the tint, the more it absorbs) from the sun, and without the climate controls running to cool things down, the interior can get even hotter. It’s something to consider if you’re looking at tinting as a solution. Clear ceramic would be a good alternative for the smaller window, but ideally smart glass for both large and small glass sections is the ultimate solution.

Regarding the dark tint and heat absorption, this is also why Rivian opted for the white frosted look for the dynamic glass(good call on their part), rather than a grey or smoked option which would trap even more heat and make the interior warmer. Hope this helps and enjoy the ride!

My experience (on an R1T):
XPEL XR Plus Sunroof Tint; 2 Piece was $450 in Florida last January. But tinting on the windshield (XPEL XR Plus Window Film 70% @ $300j and side windows (XPEL XR Plus Window Film [ 20%F/70%R] @ $600) does more to reduce heat. In Florida it is just really not an option from my viewpoint.
