I’m a lurker here. Own two Teslas (M3 SR LFP 2022 and a MY LR AWD 2023) but very much like the Rivian vehicles and look forward to seeing their model R2 when it comes out. None the less, I live south of Tucson AZ and without a reasonably close service facility buying almost any car would be a non-starter.

As it is, the Tucson Tesla service location is around 35 miles from our home. The three Teslas we have owned to date (2020 MY leased, the other two owned outright) have never needed a visit to service. The vehicles have been well used. Until recently, this included yearly trips to and from Cape Cod (2,800 miles one way) and an annual visit to sis in San Diego (+400 miles each way).

No idea whether Rivian will be setting up a service place in Tucson. Hope they do as I like the brand.

I can replace these complaints with almost any high-end vehicle manufacturer today and have them still be true. I see it as par for the course if you want an expensive vehicle.
As a former owner of BMW, Porsche. Range Rover & Mercedes I would disagree. I have loved all three of my R1Ts, but in warranty/repair experience Rivian is the absolute worst. I'm only 45 minutes from Normal and have had excellent service, but I just crossed the 36 months of total ownership (3 trucks) and have had 17 trips to Normal and 4 mobile service appointments. My current Tri Motor has been better than my QMs, but it currently is in for the 2nd time for a sensor issue (owned since mid November/19,000 miles).

I never had anything remotely close to that number of service appointments on any other vehicle. The RR Sport was supposed to be bad, but I put 58,000 miles on it in 19 months and traded for 23 cnts/mi depreciation. Never had a service call besides oil change and new tires right before I traded.

Not sure what I will do after this one, but I won't be owning it beyond the bumper to bumper warranty.

The R2 should be a much lower-maintenance and fuss experience, but that wouldn't solve the commute to service centers. I agree with some others who have implied that all luxury/premium vehicles including ICE are higher maintenance, with more bells and whistles to go wrong. Luckily in 2025, you have a lot of EV options, and I wish you luck with your next EV. I have the same truck, no big issues, but I do have concerns about my warranty expiring, as I only have 5K left. I will probably keep it because I love it too much, but I also have my R2 reservation as a lower maintenance and more dog-friendly option.

Service IS the achilles heel of Rivian. I just keep hoping it gets better with more service centers. I think they had no choice…..should they have built many service centers before they manufactured vehicles?? I dont think so.
They could reduce the strain on those SC by employing more stringent QA at the factory - even if deliveries slow down a bit.

Indeed, but the exception to the rule is the commute times and how long they keep the vehicle. Rivian is god awful at this right now. I almost forgot 3 to 4 months to get an appointment lol

And due to not being able to source parts and/or proper documentation, there is virtually no "right to repair".

I'm a huge fan of Rivian and their success thus far. But along with the launch of R2, on-going maintenance and related costs have to be addressed. As others have suggested elsewhere, these costs even have affect insurance costs - for ALL owners.

I will not try to convince my imaginary cousin to buy an R2 if there isn't an answer to the "maintenance problem".

Rivian could be a leader of RV manufacturers in this area if they choose to bring their imagination and courage to the table as I believe they have proven they are capable of doing.
This is exactly why I can't and didn't recommend Rivian to someone I like. Almost everyone who has driven mine wants one though.

I can recommend it to someone I don't. Perhaps they will win the Rivian Roulette 😉

The Richmond Service Center has been amazing for me since Tony arrived there.
My upper tailgate plastic trim is broken (brackets). I got SC appointment within a week of the request, then switched to a mobile one. Couldn't make either work, so they are mailing me the trim piece to my house! Love it!

I also bailed out. Got the X with lifetime charging and FSD. I have no regrets. I enjoyed the R1 for 3 years but it seemed like long term it was going to be more aggravation than I wanted to deal with. Brooklyn service was nice people but every trip there was stressful. My teslas all get the same updates and no gen left behind which was leaving me concerned with my gen 1 Rivian. I hope you all gets years of fun out of your Rivians. I’m going to put my brand new (1200) miles Nitto grappler 3 and running boards up for sale if anybody in NY Long Island is interested

That's unfortunate for you but I've had a Rivian since '22 and have had the same amount of repairs as I have on my BMW, less than the number I've had on an Audi. I had zero maintenance issues that required servicing outside of in my garage on my old T, and only 1 on my Tri. My Audi was in the shop 4 times for recalls and my wife's BMW had a broken charge door so it's been in service once.

All I can speak to is my own personal experience and in that experience my Rivian is right on par with any other major brand.

You got me on commute times. I had to drive 3 hours one way to get my tri serviced. However, it was in and out same day as I stressed that I was driving that far and intended on driving back home. They had to fix my rear defroster, and it was done in about 4 hours.

4 monthe for appointment for me and two weeks service time for just a foggy back up camera. Now same problem again plus my bed compressor failed, chrome on drivers arm rest door side is compromised. A few other problems. Love the truck but if i knew somehow that these issues would happen i would not have purchased this vehicle. I just dont have the free time to take care of, sadly. Maybe turn it in for the new quad. I never learn my lesson. Lol.

It's not fun having a vehicle and living in such fear. Hope you find an EV that brings you peace of mind.
1.5 years in and 7k miles later, my 24 R1SQ has not had any functional issues whatsoever. Just completed 7.5k sevice at my nearest SC in Bellevue WA 6 hours away. That drive is a treat living in this stunning part of the world, and Rivian will bring it back to me. Nice!
Waiting however long for service is fine with me also..

Best of luck!

I honestly believe Land Rover doesn't deserve the poor reputation that is so common. I've had two of them in the past and they were both completely trouble-free. I've also had three Jeeps(and still currently own one) and they have also all been 100% free of any issues, despite people's negative perception of reliability. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Jeep or Land Rover in the future.

I haven’t had any major issues but I have my fears if anything were to go wrong, or God forbid, ever had an accident with my R1S. There is only one SC in all of San Diego, and Rivian is probably one of the most popular cars on the road here - there are a dozen in my suburban subdivision alone. Appointments are 2-3 months out and it’ll probably sit there for a few more weeks before they would even look at it. Next major issue is insurance cost: I pay more to insure the Rivian than my two other cars combined. Lately I noticed the UI got slower, AC intermittently blows warm air, satellite radio fails to connect to the on board internet, etc. Minor issues I can live with but the concerns are there. I have a reservation for the new Scout and will probably switch to that when it comes out. I like the classic rugged offroad look of it. Rivian has more work to do to convince me to stay let alone upgrade.
