I've been having unhealthy desire to upgrade my R1T Gen1 Quad to R1T Gen2 Tri. I am trying to guess when the Gen 3 might be released?

My guess is that it won't be anytime soon, especially with the R2 launch just around the corner. The R2 will likely be Rivian's main growth driver, so most of the company's focus and resources will probably go there. As a result, the R1 won't get that much attention anymore, similar to how Tesla's Model S and X have mostly remained frozen in time with only occasional updates.

What do you all think?

...I'm think it won't be any time soon, considering R2 is around the corner and it will be the main growth tool in Rivian's belt and that's where most of the effort will go...
I think you've answered your own question quite accurately.

Don't forget R3/R3X just behind R2, so R1g3 probably have to wait the success of R2/R3.

I'd venture likely after the R3 release, so probably closer to 2028. With all of the new tech they are developing (and rising competition), I don't foresee them leaving their flagship behind like Tesla. I'd hope for a true Gen3 with a true rethink of the vehicle and not minor improvements and cost cutting like the "Gen2". I'd imagine the double glovebox and steering wheels features from the R2 make it there, along with better battery technology and charging times. Of course, this is all conjecture on my part, but seeing how Rivian is trying to stay relevant and competitive, not out of the realm of possibility either.

+1

Tough to tell as R3 and R2T are probably going to be prioritized and everything learned will inform a new R1. Then of our course there is CarPlay.......

As others have said 2028-2029 once the R2/R3 are out the door. This would be a logical timeframe as there's a lot of 2022 and 2023 models out there where people would start looking to replace and Rivian could easily recapture sales with a freshened product.

IMHO, there is a view that with 1/2 priced R2 and 1/3 priced R3/x, the R1 could be relegated to such low volumes to be not worth upgrading. Sort of like the Model X/S/Roadster. If R1 does get a serious refresh with R2 steering wheel, glovebox, better batteries, faster 4 motor designs that the cost may be so egregious, the sales won't deliver enough volume. Just keep an eye on the EDV sales performance. When R1 sales fall below EDV, worry about refresh cycles of both.

I believe the only reason we wouldn’t see a true generational update (beyond what Gen 2 offers) is if Rivian doesn't survive, which I don’t see happening. The R1 is to Rivian what the 911 is to Porsche, and I stand by that. I expect Gen 3 will bring 800V+ architecture, improved battery and charging tech, refined fitment, and a fresh look. Add a touch more luxury, and I’m all in.

There isn't anything about Gen2 that enthuses me.

The G3 will come after the R3, so in 3-5 years.

The next update will focus on 800v and more efficiency in the electrical and drive system.

Agree. Most car brands can successfully have similar yet different models. Take for example the Porsche Cayenne and the Macan. Quite similar but cater to different needs/wants. The R1 will be the halo car and continue to get improvements.

After R3, so 2027-2029

The focus from here on out is R2, scaling Georgia, bringing R3 online and then they can focus on other products and refreshing R1.

I’ll be slightly contrarian and say earlier than everyone thinks, because Rivian can’t seem to help themselves tinkering and changing things constantly. I guess that means im predicting 2027. However, I agree what they should do is wait.
