Based on the shareholder letter. I suspect there may be bad news for anyone waiting on a MaxPack for the R1S. On page 8/9 of the shareholder letter (https://assets.rivian.com/2md5qhoea...844f1e7/Rivian-Q4-2021-Shareholder-Letter.pdf) they talk about the diversified portfolio with the new Standard Rage pack as well as dual-motor configs. Specifically page 9 shows a table of the different configurations that make up their portfolio - with no delivery timelines listed.

No MaxPack is showed for R1S at all, so I assume that means they don't plan to release it before the dual-motor configs at all.

Another excerpt from that shareholder letter:
"With the addition of the Standard battery pack, consumers will have the option for three different battery options for the R1T and two options for the R1S, diversifying our future R1 portfolio."

Yeah, this news was really rolled out with the configurator change when they added dual motor. They scrubbed all references to any future longer range battery for the R1S with that product detail page change. The good news is there have never been any orders for it. The bad news is so folks are probably salty they didn't choose LE trims in hopes it would be available before their orders came up.

Frustrating they won't just come out and say it to folks. I keep seeing people post that CS is telling them there is no news. They were very clear when the price change happened that they were no longer going to make a 5-seater. So why not also just state the Max pack for R1S is also not going to happen. I don't think the configurator ever allowed for a 5-seat option either. Edit: Never mind, the configurator did have 5-seat versions originally.

It did, they took 5-seater orders for Adventure and Explore trims. They didn't take any removable roof orders or max pack orders which are the two features I noticed they scrubbed.

They probably aren't saying no max pack R1S, in case competitors come out with 400 mile 7 passenger SUVs, they may find a way to make it work. But people should probably stop waiting for products that aren't on the web page, since some products on the web page are still 2 years out.

Ah ok - I didn't realize the 5-seater was on there. That makes sense why they called it out as being cancelled then.

100%. I'm sure they are looking at ways of getting more/different cells in the R1's but perhaps they have learned a lesson as far as having too many dangling carrots/promises out there.

I guess I'm one of the few that intended to buy a Max Pack R1S but configured an LE since there was no Max Pack option in November 2020. At this point I guess I feel like a genius... I had always intended to punt as soon as a Max Pack variant was announced but now here I am with an LE reservation and I intend to take delivery and drive it for a few years until they release whatever the next iteration is that includes a longer range. At that point I can decide to trade up or not.

Maybe they will look at the 4680 format.

One of the Monroe videos said you can get more miles from the same space using 4680 over the 2170.

This was absolutely my plan as well. Get an early LE R1S and upgrade 3-4 years down the road if they do some big upgrades. ;)

There was a report that they were looking at making prismatic cells in-house, so there’s a very real chance 21700 will be the only cylindrical size they ever use.

Also, Sandy Monroe has basically started just thinking whatever Tesla does is the best, whether it really is or not. There are some advantages to 4680 cells. There are also disadvantages. It’s also always been curious to me that Tesla announced the 4680 cells have 5x the energy as their 21700 cells…. umm… there’s 5.5x the volume, so that suggests the cells are LESS energy dense.
