Hi All,

I pre-ordered the R1S in March 2022 (missed the price lock by 20 days). I had originally ordered the dual motor. Now that it's out, at least on Rivian's config page, it states as 340 miles on 21s. I saw the EPA is 352 on 21s.

For me, the Performance is a 5k upgrade, whereas the Quad is 6k.. so only 1k more to upgrade to the Quad.

I was told that in conserve mode in the quad, you can get anywhere from 330-340 miles on a full charge. With a Dual motor only using the front wheel, until it deems necessary to use all-wheel drive, isn't it essentially "conserve mode"?

If that's the case, does it make sense to get the Dual Motor when the Quad Motor is only 1k more?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

For the record, we will be using this as our family car. Not going off-roading.. But will be using it to go to the snow once or twice a year and taking it camping.
But for 1k more, shouldn't I get the Quad Motor? Or stick with Dual?

Thanks!

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
There does not appear to be a Conserve drive mode for the 2-motor configurations. The dual motor config has a motor up front, and another in the rear, both with differentials. It’s still AWD. the quad has a motor on each axle (via gearing) and has a Conserve mode which mechanically (via magnets) disconnects the rear drive from the axles.

You will get greater efficiency and hence range with the dual vs. the quad. Trade off is that you get greater capability and performance in the quad over the dual.

I too miss the preorder price lock by about two weeks. Initially a R1S dual motor, but had access to R1T shop back in March and was able to snag a quad motor for about 9k more, not the full price hike. Do you have R1 shop access? If so I'm curious what prices you are seeing now. For 1k more I would definitely choose the quad. Better capabilities and resale if u go that route .

I keep getting denied access for the R1 shop.. I've asked like 10 times! They say they are focused on giving R1 access to 2021 pre orders.. But I know 2022 orders after my date who have had access.. so I am just confused how they are doing this.

I have a quad now. If I’m to get one right now, I’d just get a non performance dual motor to save a few thousand dollars. It’s way more than enough for a family car. Launching the quad is fun but you don’t do that everyday. And you get bragging rights. To each their own.

Conserve mode should only be used in emergency only because they wear out the front tires fast. You usually just drive in all-purpose.

IF you are considering the Performance pack vs quad - I would recommend Quad. I am really not seeing the benefit of dual+performance from a price stand point and the range improvement is paltry.
