Hi all
Its been amazing 21k miles driving on my CY R1S 21 inch tires Gen1 Quad motor. Last week when I tool my R1s to repair Flat tire to discount tire (There was nail) they said i need new tires in next 1 - 2k miles. currently i have 21k miles within 1.5 years. so now question is should i replace 21 with 21 for around 2k or go to 20 by spending almost 4k (as i need new wheels). I read somewhere 21 will be discontinued soon. but do i need to spend extra 2k now or post pone. Any thoughts.

I am in the same situation with my R1T and 21s. It looks like the only current option are the OE Pirelli's. Maybe Michelin is coming out with a 21" EV rated Defender, but conflicting info on release date. All advice is appreciated.

Do some searching on this forum... you can go to 20's with a 275/60 r20 tire and have nearly identical circumference (i.e. not need to re-calibrate the speedometer) as the original 21's. If you are looking for an inexpensive option that looks like OEM, check out the MSW type 52's on Tire Rack. You can get the MSW wheels with 20's for about what it will cost you to purchase the 21" tires.

It's hard to say which way you should go. I was in the same boat, as are many here, with the factory 21". I've had my truck since September of 2022 and have already replaced the factory 21" Pirelli tires once. Now I'm due for tires again. I would have liked to stick with the 21" but get Michelin Defender instead of OEM Pirelli. However, with the Michelin tires getting pushed back and a definitive date unavailable (the current word is mid-September), I decided to grab a set of 20" Atomic Wheels, and I'll fit them with 20" Defenders. I probably have enough tread to wait and see if Michelin releases the 21" in September, but with such limited tire options for the 21", I figured I would make the change anyway. My biggest concern is a range hit, but my new wheels are much lighter than the 21" OEM and more than offset the 2 lbs. heavier tires. I expect the range will be similar, and I believe that is the experience of a few others here who have made a similar change to their wheel/tire combination. The sidewall will be a little taller with 275/60/20 instead of 275/55/21, increasing puncture resistance when going off paved roads, and the ride quality should improve (not that it was a problem for me before). I guess, lastly, even though I have a full size spare, I get peace of mind when I'm on a trip, knowing the 20" tires are more readily available than the 21" if a situation should arise.

I've been running ram 2363 wheels and Pirelli all seasons in 275/60 r20. I don't have numbers to prove it, but I haven't notice any efficiency difference vs. the stock 21 setup.

For whatever it's worth I have the 20's and about 43k and changing my tires now. Although the stock 20's get loud with age, I do like the all around performance and decided to go with then again. Plus the tread has RJS....not that Rivian intended that...but a very cool detail by chance anyway....Just going to rotate them more often and in a x pattern to see if I can mitigate the noise increase with mileage.

Don't think you could go wrong with getting another set of 21s and changing wheel size next go around. The options will only continue to get better. But you could switch now too.

Rivian has discontinued this wheel and tire option starting with refresh. However, Pirelli has not announced it would discontinue the tire. Will they? No one knows yet until they say either way. But since there are no other tires in this size, and customer base is reduced to a subset of existing R1 owners… Knowing how supply & demand works, it wouldn’t be a wild idea to future proof yourself by switching to 20” wheels with 275/60R20. The outer diameter is only 0.3% larger. All of your speed, odometer and range displays would still be accurate. And you have far more tire options available to choose from and to find in stock.

1EV has nice 20” wheels for 500 a piece, TPS not included. I run 275/60/20- tire calculators say same size as the OEM 21”. With in .1”.

275/50R22 is another option very comparable in diameter to the OEM 21".

Best wishes!
