Oh ya and I forgot to mention, charging from 80-100% to get that full 275 mile range with the 20" AT tires typically only means from leaving your house or overnight stay to the FIRST charger. Not too many people are going to want to spend an EXTRA 45 minutes over what they've already spent charging to get to 80%, going from 80 to 100%. At least routinely.

Remove the top 20% and bottom 5% of charging, leaves you with 206 miles of range, in ideal conditions, with AT tires on the large pack. This is why a Max pack in the R1S is so appealing.

I'd hope people get a home charger (yes, I realize that's not always possible, but it's better than a 45min start to the day at some other charger).

But your 206 miles math. I'm crying here, make my range anxiety stop! :whew:

And let us not forget that this is when it is new. Even very well managed battery system will lose 7% - 10% of capacity in the first five years and then level off.

By year 5, your 316 will be more like 295 and your 275 is more like 255. Extra range is almost always worth it when you can get it.
Its just that will you keep the same vehicle for 5 yrs?

Here in SoCal - auto capital of the world - most people lease and the lease term is up 2~3 yrs. EVs, in general, will suffer from technology change more than ICE since the vehicles are essentially a laptop with wheels.

If one plans to keep the vehicle for well beyond 5 yrs, I would argue that one needs to keep his/her mind open as in 5 years, there will be so much change amongst EV offering that R1 may appear quite dated and inferior....

Hi all

Dumb newbie question

Ordered an R1S Dec 21 so not an early adopter like most :)

When I configured (my 5 passenger) model there was only the "Large Pack" available and the "Max Pack" was only available on the R1T

Was the "Max Pack" an option earlier for LE R1S orders?

Cheers, Andy

The short answer is no, it was never configurable, so far it has just been promised to be 'coming soon'

Max pack was never available, I would have been first in line (I waited, hoping Rivian would finally put the option up, they finally said not gonna happen).

The issue is that the wheel base is much shorter on the R1S than on the R1T, thus they can't fit the same battery pack into it (ie the max pack).

Now, if they were to suddenly come up with better battery solution/technology before they deliver them in 2023, I'm sure a lot of us would go for that option.

Agreed. We saw the R1T skateboard when picking up ours, and there's barely any room in that one for the max pack (it's not much more than a foot, and angled at that). Here's a pano my daughter took with my phone:

The space for the max pack difference is that small gap on the left side, just above the edge of the sign. Everything else between the wheels is the large pack already!

Given that the R1S wheelbase is already over a foot shorter, I don't know where the extra battery would live.

Also note that our delivery person said they decided against using the under-seat space for batteries for safety reasons.

Hopefully by then... lots more chargers available

As battery technology improves, less space would be needed

On one hand, I’m happy that customer service said 400+ miles, but because of past misinformation they have shared, I’m not holding my breath.

How about fill the frunk and sub-trunk/spare tire cavity with batteries?
