R1S running boards news ?

I just took delivery of my R1S and my delivery specialist mentioned in passing that installation of runningboards can void the warranty, which one customer was very frustrated to learn recently on a service visit. I didn’t get details from him on what exactly was the issue and if that would be the case for all runningboards. I guess I would want to make sure I knew Rivian‘s official stance on this before I proceeded.

Yes, any modification or service you do on any of your vehicles COULD void the warranty IF they can prove that it was the cause of the failure.
That is a big IF and I would say pretty much a non existent worry for something like running boards.

Boiler plate response that means nothing and is meant to scare you away from any aftermarket parts or servicing things yourself.

In reviewing the warranty guide, the third-party aftermarket installations warning does not appear to refer to any one specific type of installation, but rather refers to an installation that somehow compromises the vehicle, so I would guess that maybe it would only be damage related to the installation or subsequent damage caused by it the new component. Still, I’m hesitant to do anything without Rivian‘s written approval given the anecdote shared.

Can only void warranty with respect to damage or compromises directly caused by the running boards or other modification/add-on.

I had a similar discussion with the Rivian rep who gave me the test drive and was also the person who I took my R1S delivery from at Rivian service center in San Jose, CA.

What he mentioned was the warranty impact would be limited to what changes were made - In this case we cut holes in the two plastic (superficial) underside attachments on either side. That is what I understood, understand this could be interpreted in many ways and is not in writing from Rivian.

So to add to what others have said it is a fair bargain compared to the utility you are getting with minimal impact to warranty from my perspective.

Looks like the same cheap Chinese boards that are sold under a few different names.

From what I recall, they hang a bit lower than the other more pricey offerings. Great if you want easier ingress/egress. Bad if you still want the factory clearance.

I bought ones from Amazon. Shipped from China (air freight, took only 3 days since I ordered til when it showed up at my door). Came out a lot better than I thought. I believe it's the same as the initial Hansshow version

@238AMK your R1S looks cool. Having had running boards for some time, would not go a day without them - also family would be up in arms.

Feel Rivian missed an opportunity to make them would have gladly paid a higher amount who knows they may still come through some day

So I got my spare installed during a mobile Rivian service visit. I did check with the rep. who came to do the install, the subject came up when he saw my R1S running boards. It appears Rivian is working on running boards however ETA is TBD.
