This will be highly subjective. I would say it depends…

1) How much will it cost to upgrade? E.g. loss on the trade, cost of new vehicle, taxes, etc
2) The benefits are especially in the Rivian Autonomy platform (I have a review video coming soon, the adaptive lighting is really cool too (I also have some video footage of this coming soon), the ride is more refined, the cameras are higher res so dash cam and blind spot cameras are more usable, it does have a meat pump so should be a bit more efficient.

With all that said, the first generation is still an awesome vehicle and if you are a price conscious shopper, gen 1 is an awesome deal. Also with gen 1 it’s an exceptional value for the HP/Torque and quad motor setup. To get equivalent performance on gen 2 your into six figures.

only you can answer whether or not you feel the additional features are worth the cost. If you have the budget for it, then I don’t think you would be disappointed.

I wouldn't with the R1T since the length is longer and the suspension isn't as bad as the G1 R1S that I have.

I owe gen 1 2024 quad. Test drove a gen2 tri, and would not swap my truck. Love my quad . I’ll wait to test drive the gen 2 quad.
I’m just in love with my quad.

I didn’t know Gen 2 had a meat pump, so I guess it would really depend on on how much meat you like to eat meat ….

my dad was a meat cutters apprentice back in the 1960s! He was not a sausage maker …that’s an art all to itself. No meat jokes folks ?

So…almost 6 months since this thread was started, and I’m curious if anyone has anything to add to it?

With the EV lease credit going away in September, I’m thinking of upgrading to a Gen 2 R1T. Don’t get me wrong…I absolutely love my ‘24. I have had only 1 issue (rear passenger door handle), and the deal I got was insane (was less than my A5 Sportback, and I put $0 down). But…I know I will upgrade to another Rivian in the future, so why not do it while the credit is still available?

I’ve run the numbers with the current offers, and they’re not nearly as good as what I got last year, but I’m hoping they make a big push next month before the credit goes away. Additionally, the current ones require either Performance or Tri/Quad, and I’m not that interested in those features. Sure, they’d be nice, but not “must haves” for me.

So if they do introduce new/better offers …in the end, is the Gen 2 viewed as an upgrade? Was it worth it for those of you who did upgrade?

You do you but, if you got a great deal and like what you have; I'd wait for Rivian to improve the quality and QC. All the best.

I will admit that seeing a bunch of people post here about issues with their Gen 2s does give me pause, but I gotta believe (or at least hope) that it’s related more to this being a message board, and that many come here for the sole reason to complain.

So, guess that’s why I’m asking for opinions from people who upgraded from a Gen 1 to a Gen 2: was it worth it?

I went from a '22 R1T to a '25 R1S Trimax. I've had it for almost a year now; I got it last November. I have just under 14k miles on it with several long trips. I would say my Gen 2 is an upgrade over my Gen 1 in every way except for one: the sound system. I had the original Meridian sound, and it was hands down the best sound system I've ever had in any vehicle. The Gen two system is the best I've ever had, except for the Meridian.

Everything else is a small or a significant step up, depending on the feature. The ADAS is a significant step up; it is hands-off on most freeways now and is reportedly set to introduce the feature on unmapped roads soon. Depending on how much you use this it is worth the upgrade alone unless you want to run the commaai system.

The suspension is better, my Gen 2 is devoid of all the suspension sounds that my Gen 1 had. It is smooth and composed. The adaptive headlights are very cool and a big deal for me, as I live out in the country, so the high beams are always on at night. I've seen animals in the ditch when I've had a car in front of me where I wouldn't have had I been using a normal system.

The Ascend interior is a step up over Gen 1 as well. The Gen 1 was great, the Gen 2 is just that little bit better.

Also the max pack gives that little bit of extra range that makes long drives relatively easy. I take a trip a few times a year that's around 1K miles one way and the Gen 2 takes out an entire charge stop.

After adjusting the EQ settings I have been very, very pleased with the sound quality in my Tri. It could use a little more bass, so I have considered doing the sub replacement others have done, but in reality I just like heavy bass. The sound is balanced and when bass is in the music, I can definitely hear it well. IMO improving the bass is a personal preference and not a sound quality issue.

I was expecting the sound quality to be horrible based on so many complaints in the forum, but I agree with you. It is very good, especially for a manufacturer provided system. Maybe even excellent? Gasp!
