Had the chance of seeing the Gen2 R1S today and I have to say, I don’t feel like we first gen owners are missing out on much. (Only had about 15 minutes with it, but thought I’d share)

1. Felt like interior build quality on Gen1 was a bit more solid
2. Frunk significantly bigger in Gen1
3. Was expecting infotainment in Gen2 to be much quicker, but the difference isnt too discernible
4. Cameras definitely better in Gen2, but license plates still seemed to be a bit grainy on the camera feed.
5. Loved the camp drawer option, but was told it won’t be coming to Gen1

Still love my Gen1 to death. Still the best car I’ve owned by far.

Yea. Gen 2 is the obvious choice if buying a new one now, but not compelling enough to move to if you already have Gen 1
For me I would search out an early lower mileage G1 QM with Meridian audio. Can't beat the deals available from what I see.

That way one gets the best audio they have put in the vehicle combined with QM benefits, still lots of warranty, and likely about half the price of a G2 QM and just slightly more than half price of a G2 TM.

Unless the promise of self driving is the main goal....the G2.

That's the first I've heard of this. I can't think of a technical reason why it wouldn't be compatible if the speaker is cross-compatible.

I beleive they said the infotainment saw zero upgrades, it's the same part as gen1.

What they did was added a separate compute module that handles camera/driver autonomy stuff so some stuff is no longer done in the infotainment system.

The drawer slid in and out as if it were on slides (similar to a cabinet drawer). I didn’t want to climb in there and look deeper given the crowd of people, but it wasn’t free moving like the camp speaker is.

Ahh that makes sense then. I don’t recall having read that it was a separate module for autonomy. Thanks for the clarification!

Yeah that was a bit confusing the way they presented that. The infotainment computer and the autonomy computer are, indeed, separate. But they are housed in the same enclosure. They made a huge deal about the power of the new autonomy computer but said nothing about infotainment.. so probably very similar if not exactly the same

Yeah makes total sense now. I got the same blank white pages when loading another screen in the Gen2 as I do in my Gen1.

The infotainment is also updated in gen2 vs. gen1. Some consolidation, improved 'AI' capability, and camera processing. They mention it's 'improved' but not many metrics on it. You can see this in the investor day presentation (~56 mins in):

Suspension and NVH improvements would be the reason to upgrade for me. Everything else is meh. Looking forward to driving one.

Oh I agree. It’ll be year 3 next year for mine, so I’m sure I’ll get the itch at some point.

that’s not limited to Rivian though… that’s a personal issue on my end ?
