I have been lurking on this site for a few months and have found tons of great info. Hoping the community can help me here:

- Ordered a custom Gen 2 R1T (Dual Large) with 22" Sport Dark wheels back in June
- Current delivery says Sept/Oct
- I like the look of the truck as high as it can go and have researched all of the ways in which you can do that in the software
- I have been researching wheels on this forum and other sites and recently saw that they added an all-terrain package with 20" dark wheels (with a matching spare)
- From my research, the truck would ride higher and potentially smoother with the 20" wheels, but would lose some mileage which I am not worried about
- The current build times are now Nov/Dec and when I ask a chat rep, they can make the wheel change (I don't have a VIN yet) but can't guarantee it won't push back my delivery date

So here are my questions:
1. Does anyone have experience in changing their order and it either did move or didn't move the date back?
2. Is there a meaningful difference in height between the 20" AT wheels vs. the 22" like it seems from pictures online and in the custom builder on Rivain.com
3. Can I purchase aftermarket tires that will fit the 22" rims that will help raise the truck more which would allow me to keep the delivery date and still change the wheels later?

Thanks for any/all help!

Congratulations! For changing the order I would reach out to your guide or the customer engagement folks. Wheels should be something fairly easy to change. However, the all-terrain package itself includes the reinforced underbody shield which is not as easy to change. With all that said, you've confirmed your order, but you haven't confirmed your configuration, so you should be able to change that and if you can't change it on the website, they should be able to change it for you.

As far as the twenties being smoother I wouldn't say they are smoother but I would say they absorb bumpy roads better because they have more sidewall. The r1t I have driven with the 20-in AT tires are a little less smooth than the 21s I'm sure due to the aggressive tread. Also, they tend to get noisy with time but they look awesome. ?

to answer number 2.

diameter of 20" with stock AT (275/65/20) is 1 inch larger than your stock 22" . Not gonna be that big of different in ride height. You always can get 275/60/20 AT tires instead to keep it the same diameter as your stock 22". Swap it anytime you want during the year and don't have to worry about recalibrate or efficiency lost.

1. You can ask to just change wheels, often they'll keep your VIN and just swap them out
2. Height diff: 1/2"
3. Yes, Michelin Defender LTX MS2 has an LT in 275/60R22 that has 35" diameter, so adds 1" height

AFA driving around in high/highest, you can't... The truck automatically lowers to standard (at most) over 45mph. You also change the camber at different heights, leading to torque steering issues and poor tire wear. The trucks are aligned at standard height and should be driven as such, that's why a lot of folks (especially early folks) who thought it was a good idea to drive low/lowest in conserve regretted it.

Anything larger than a 34" tire may induce rubbing on the truck as tolerances get really tight. For Example, Rivian even states that tire chains are OK with a 33" tire, but are a no-no with 34" tires.

As I read the Owner's Guide, @Mathme, Rivian approves snow cables with 33" tires, but doesn't approve actual chains with any approved tire size.

I think Rivian is too cautious, but I'm doing my "due diligence" about chains this summer, in order to have the best winter traction on our challenging hill. I'd like to use Spikes-Spider traction devices, if I can do it safely. Others' input appreciated.

***

Above, @LL75 says tire diameter of stock 20" is one inch greater than Rivian's other OEM tires, and @Riviot says the vehicle is 0.5" taller with stock 20". Both @LL75 and @Riviot are correct, since only half of the tire diameter is below the axle where it affects height.

Best to all!

thanks all, super helpful info!

So I can purchase these tires and have them swapped after delivery to gain extra height, with the same 22” rims?

Michelin Defender LTX MS2 has an LT in 275/60R22 that has 35" diameter, so adds 1" height

Rivian won't like it, but I believe others on the forums have gone with 35" without rubbing in standard. Search around, let us know what you find.

275/55R20 would be good for you, but I'm pretty sure that's not an available size.

From what I remember a Rivian is programmed for the tires/wheels installed. So the suspension for 34” tires is 0.5” lower than the other options. One can have it reprogrammed by a Rivian mechanic (rumored to be able to be changed by the owner in a future software update). It ends up they are all about the same height if set for the installed tires. The 34” tire option has 0.5” less wheel gap. It is not recommended to drive with the wrong size programmed. So if you took delivery of a 33” tire then put 34” tires…

What do you mean, 34" (20" AT programming) is .5" lower?

And who does not recommend it?

The suspension rides 0.5” lower (like 0.5” at the hub closer to the bump stops) with the 34” tires programmed. So, the ground clearance and overall height is about the same no matter what tires you have. I’ve read Rivian recommends against not matching the programing to the tires. Others mentioned that the parking sensors, cameras, speedometer, etc. is the reason Rivian wants everything to match.

Update here: I spoke with a few reps and they said I could change it (cost about $3k extra) and it likely wouldn't impact the delay since they haven't started on it at all so I went ahead with it today (20" AT Dark). When I login now, it shows the updated specs, but the Sept/Oct delivery estimate is no where to be found. It's just blank. Any experience with this?
