For me the SUV makes more sense, more often. Even for my “big and dirty" load (my dogs) it’s safer and of course it’s far more secure. It’s also more flexible because it’s easy to convert between two seats and large cargo space to five seats and decent cargo space, all the way to seven seats still with some cargo space. I camp both in my SUV and on it (in a rooftop tent). I can tow my boat. It’s good in the snow. I can go off road, but I don’t do that much. Sometimes I wash it and drive around San Francisco and it still feels like I belong.

I'm a truck guy, although our household has a truck for hauling and road-tripping, and a small car for urban errands and commuting. I do haul lots of stuff for gardening and home improvement, so I definitely need a truck as opposed to an SUV. But in my local neighborhood, the SUV and crossover definitely dominate the landscape. If I had a magic want, I'd wave it and make a older-Tacoma sided electric truck that would be a good hauler/urban commuter. But I realize that the market for a crossover is WAY bigger in the USA, and that's where manufacturers are going to put their resources. Lot of my local truck guys drive full-sized trucks (F-150, Ram, Silverado), so the market for small trucks isn't really that big. It's a shame, but that's the world we live in.

As a very early Rivian adopter, I have noticed a shift in the dynamics of Rivian. At the beginning, it was all about the trucks. Of course there was a period when the R1T was the only vehicle in the wild. Most of the the threads and post on these Forums related to the use of Rivians in off-road situations. The Rivian was truly perceived as an adventure vehicle. Over the last several years, the Rivian has morphed into a kid Uber and socker mom vehicle. With the introduction of the R1S, the R1T has faded into the background, rarely to be mentioned.

I fully realize that Rivian's direction must be dictated by sales numbers. The R2 will be an SUV only which speaks volumes.

I am curious to know what the R1T vs. R1S production figures are. Do anyone know what the percentage of tucks produced is?

Brian
Thanks, Brian. My R1S Tri replaced my much beloved 1990 Toyota 4Runner, which I had for 28 years and absolutely loved. It was completely gutless and pretty cramped, but I loved it. Solid V6 and 5-speed tranny, with all the bells and whistles. Took me everywhere. I am a devout (true) SUV man. On the flip side, I've also been an EV enthusiast since 2013. I've had 2 Fiat 500e's, 1 Chevy Spark, 2 Chevy Bolts, and 1 Chevy Blazer EV (all leased). I'm all in on EV, and was quite intrigued when Rivian came into the market and introduced the R1S. Absolutely love the range, power, comfort, relative compactness (compared to R1T), and interior space. I do some off-roading to get to some off-the-beaten-path campsites, and R1S exceeds the capability of my 4Runner in every way. No soccer moms in the back country of the high Sierras. I'm 6'2", and can sleep in it comfortably with the back 2 rows folded flat. I loved my 4Runner, but haven't missed it at all.

Adventure on!

I thought I saw something like 70/30 SUV to Trucks. Seems about right to me based on all the SUVs I see around.
I asked the same question to a sales rep when I had my R1T in for a quick tire rotation and 7500 mile inspection and he said it's even more than 70/30 in my area (Northern Virginia). They sell about five R1Ss to every one R1T.

I kind of suspected numbers like that. If this ratio continues, R1T's will be like hen's teeth in a couple of years.

I like the idea of off roading, and I've done a small amount of it myself, but the repair costs and timelines are not worth the risk.
Repair costs?

Wish I knew R1T was going to released first or had 2 reservations for each model. Have the R1S but would've preferred the R1T for the longer wheelbase and ride. Had some R1T loaners and had buyers remorse.

My deposit says there is!

I'd really like to have a modern version of a GMC Syclone or a Holden Ute, but I think the Slate coming to market is a lot more likely.
My uncle had the Cyclone back in '93 and it was a treat to drive with the aftermarket stereo he had. In my High School, it was all Mustang 5.0's but I had a piece of crap that I was grateful for.

Rivian got me to buy my first pickup truck. And I Iove it.

I Iove how I can just throw crap in the back with no worry about what might spill or scratch. I love how it holds 60 bags of mulch - no way that is fitting in a SUV. And the gear tunnel is one of my favorite things ever.

My wife drives a SUV.

I recently had an R1S as a loaner for a week. 1st day I loved it and thought maybe I should have gotten one, by mid week I was starting to think it didn’t ride or handle as good as my truck, and by the end of the week I couldn’t wait to get my truck back.
I would do an R1T again and might someday.

I'm in the (apparent) minority of R1T owners. I was a long-time pickup owner, and a long-time EV owner, and couldn't wait for the first (usable) EV pickup. The fact that it was Rivian, with the "knocked it completely out of the park" R1T was just icing on the cake.

(Yes, I'm specifying "usable" because Ford and Chevy both came out with EV pickups in the late '90s. But they were compact pickups, no rapid charging, less than 100 miles range.)

No R2 for me even though I have a deposit on one. I'd buy an R2T though. Have a deposit on a Slate and much more likely I'll covert it than the R2.

I think the R1T is the better vehicle when it comes to ride quality. I love the versatility of have a bed, a trunk in the bed and the gear tunnel. I added a topper and a gear tunnel slide. Makes is so much more usable on a daily basis than an R1S would be. SUVs are, for the most part, soccer moms' cars in my area.

If I were to go with an SUV again, it would be the Lucid Gravity.
