Seems 300 miles is a bit short given new battery technology. Will Rivian offer battery options as they do with their current lineup?

I don't think they've announced anything official.

Given industry conventions, expect either a small/large choice, or maybe a small/medium/large choice.

They may choose different nomenclature such as large/max or tall/vente, but it's all the same concept.

Our Rivian is our first EV and it took a couple of longer trips to help us overcome our range anxiety (including one where we were at 2% pulling into a L3 charger). Obviously, I want as much range as I can get, but as long as it has 300+ max range (call it 250-270 practical) I'll be able to make the trips I do regularly without thinking.

I'd like to go from Walla Walla to Seattle without a stop.

Will be announced in due time. Most likely different size packs and trims to fit different pricing tiers, starting from 250-ish.

I expect two battery options, a "standard" size, possibly LFP, only available in the single motor variant that gets 270ish miles and a "Large" variant, likely similar chemistry to the Large/Max that gets 325ish miles.

If I had to guess, I'd go with 85kwh and 105 for battery capacity.

Even with a similar range to the original R1 Large, you'd probably have quicker charging sessions to get the same range.
IMO if they can get 15-80 down under 20 minutes that would make a substantial difference for longer drives.

All they've said is that "all those motor combinations can achieve over 300 miles of range".

Presumably that's with the biggest battery option (if they offer different battery sizes) but that means the least efficient tri-motor should get >300 miles of range, so the most efficient single-motor should get well over that.

As long as real world range while running the AC or heat is over 250 I’ll be happy.

I used to think that EV range = distance only.

What I've discovered is that range capacity in an EV needs to cover the overnight(S) consumption rate and how it's used. What I mean is if you goto a camp site without any charging infrastructure and spend a nigh or two reduces the nearest charging radius if the destination does not provide charging capacity.

For commuter needs for most people can be satisfied by 250ish mile range. For outdoor adventures, probably not and most likely needs well over 300 miles range energy capacity.

People need to consider the outlier use case and understand the potential shortfall, then decide the right range model to select.

10 minute bathroom break is all it takes

That and frequent deep discharging and recharging is not ideal for battery health. Going from ICE to electric, some habit (?) adjustments are required.

Exactly! One of my daughters goes to a school that's 124 miles from our house - If I could drive my R1S Gen1 Quad in conserve the entire distance I might be able to do a round trip without charging, but it's just too close to do so. I typically arrive at school with 48-50% battery left. There's a Tesla station at a Sheetz convenience store that we usually hit either on the way there or on the way home. I pull in, plug in, use the restroom and get a snack and come out and unplug and we're on our way. It really doesn't take any longer than when we used to do the drive in our ICE, except that I don't have to stand by the pump in case the auto-shutoff doesn't work. With 8-10 minutes of charging (and the ability to start pre-conditioning the battery about 30 minutes before we arrive), I then have a comfortable margin for the trip.

Count on the base model (the one at $45K) being 250-290 miles, and the larger size being 350 miles or so. RJ hints at this in the most recent podcast on "inside evs" .

If the top range tri set up can get over 330 miles, then I'm in. That would be very compelling.
