R2 Conserve Mode

I was taking a look at the R2 owner's guide and noticed it included conserve mode. Conserve mode notably isn't included on the dual-motor R1 as all purpose automatically it switches to single-motor FWD when efficient.

The R2 documentation curiously also states that "Conserve mode automatically switches between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive when conditions allow." How is that different from all purpose?

Anyone know what conserve mode actually does on the R2? I would have assumed it locks in single-motor RWD, but the owners guide suggests otherwise. I also don't understand why conserve mode would be available on the dual-motor R2, but not the dual-motor R1.

R2 is RWD biased part-time AWD. “Conserve”, by default, is RWD.

Conserve forces RWD unless you really put the accelerator down.

I tried conserve during my test drive and it was VERY slow off the line. It might adjust throttle mapping as well.

I had the same question as I use conserve frequently on road trips in my G1 R1S. I asked the Rivian AI Assistant, this was the response. Not sure if I’ll use it much, when I changed from all purpose on my R2 the miles went from 309 to 313.

The one thing a bit suspicious that this is blended between R1 and R2 because it does say adjust ride height which cannot be done on the R2.

Sounds pointless based on that range estimation difference, which is why I presume they chose to not support this mode on the DM R1? But maybe they are including it on the R2 because RWD is nicer to drive than FWD?

Think of it as shifting into 6th gear or Overdrive as they used to call it. Once you are at a cruising speed it would kick in. Just there to maintain speed. When you need to accelerate, or get up a hill, both motors kick in.

In mine it went from 309 in all purpose to 313 in conserve.

only 23 miles on the vehicle though so no history to pull from.

It is meaningless, a 1% range boost! I noted similar issues with the R1 conserve mode, sometimes in the perfect weather it would add maybe 10 miles of range, other times it seemed like it didn't make a difference, it could be that right now the difference is minimal but thru updates/refinments Rivian might be able to make it more meaningful (~10-15 miles for example). For R1, the decrease in performance and increase in poor handling (especially if in an emergency situation) made it really unusable except in rare situations...would love to know why Rivian decided to keep it as a feature in the R2...

Interesting, in my G1 R1S I consistently get about 8 to 10% boost using conserve on the freeway during trips.

If anyone is curious, it won't do a burnout in conserve mode (doesn't let you turn off traction control)

Wrong. In R1T tri motor max pack. The difference between all purpose and conserve is a lot. 2.09 in AP to 2.67 in conserve. 22" range wheels.

Don't know what the long term efficiency will be. Been seeing videos it's ranging between 2.7 to 3.3 or 3.5. That's not huge when r1t tri is getting 2.68 for long range (11000 miles). And that's with all type of driving fast slow streets freeway traffic no traffic and all, but in conserve mode. Also much bigger and have more features compare to r2.
