You will be wrong and it will be 2026 since they are building out of Normal and that expansion is complete.
I most definitely wouldn't have been wrong if they stayed with the plan to build the R2 in Georgia, which is when I made my prediction. And only time will tell if I still won't be wrong even after they changed the plans to build them in Illinois.

So you think you could still be right, let’s see six months to go (or less)!

My father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate, who works as a tint installer at a shop that does Rivians told me that R3 will start shipping in February. That's as good as fact from RJ's mouth.

Possibly...let's see what happens. Rivian probably needs this for its survival, so the incentive is obviously there.

Most Likely scenario even before your rumor. (my assumption )

H1 20226 - Employee and Social Media Influencer delivery that will full fill delivery commitment promised to wall street.
Q3 - Couple customer deliveries
Q4 - Couple more deliveries

Q1+ 2027 - Production ramp up
2028 - GA comes online , Mass production R2
Mid/late 2029 Start R3 preproduction

I'll just chime in and say it's not delayed. Electrek better not source me.

Maybe it was a misunderstanding. It seems like I read that production will start slow. I wouldn't count on actually being able to buy one until 2027ish. People with reservations get them first.

I know this thread is most likely wrong. BUT, you would think they would have launched the detailed specs page and configurator by now if R2 was releasing in the next few months.

They could easily share the configurator in late January/February with the Q4 results and that gives over three months to choose before sales start. They will have one basic configuration (dual motor) to start with that simplifies build.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

When a company says the first half of 2026, I think what they’re really saying is June 30th. I also think by this time they’ll release a launch edition to employees, influencers, and early adopters, which will build hype and give them a chance to work out some bugs.

Eventually I think they’ll ask other reservation holders if they want to take delivery, but most of the deliveries will probably happen in late 2026 to 2027 and beyond. No big deal in the grand scheme of things. At least they’re not delaying until 2027 or 2028 or cancelling things altogether, like some of the OEMs. Rivian is an EV exclusive company after all.

I wish them luck and hope they succeed. I put down a deposit on an R2 a couple of months ago, so I’d imagine it would be Gen 3 hardware.

I'm curious, why do you (and others apparently) think this time-frame and for some even later volume production will eventuate? Rivian are already running R2 vehicles through the Normal production line. RJ just posted video about them using automated lines for hanging doors, hood and lift gate. What causes a 6-9 month delay or longer before production vehicles will be available for customers in volume? What could they possibly be doing that would necessitate taking all that time given where they are today and the desire/requirement to ramp as early as is practical?

When I hear first half of 2026 I think end of Q1 to allow time for any issues to be resolved. It would be surprising their standard plan was for June and they have themselves no wriggle room given how much the stock market is watching.

I don’t think it will be a delay so much as a slow ramp up. This is Rivian’s first high-volume affordable vehicle and they want to get it right. Also specs and pricing haven’t been released for the launch edition, there’s no configurator on the website, and people with reservations (myself included) haven’t been contacted yet. I think there are some more production steps that haven’t been announced either, like final quality and safety testing. Rivian is usually very open about these things and would want to hype it up before release.

Y’all are of course correct. Rivian only needs to activate the configurator on launch day to meet demand. But, for this type of community, I feel like they should read the room and provide specs, configurator (or at least the gawdamn colors) now.
