R2 Horn - WTF?

I honestly think this entire thread is pretty funny. “I LOVE a software defined vehicle like Rivian. But give me an electromagnetic airhorn for god’s sake!”

Forums are like every other social media platform. Give people space to complain and argue, and they’ll use it. Just cracks me up.

I'm not complaining about the tech used for the horn, although rereading my OP does indeed make it look that way. I was just really hoping for a horn that's as loud as the horn on my Subaru Outback. The horn on our R1S is woefully inadequate for when I feel I need a horn (which is not nearly as often as my wife believes it should be).

You know how you can get two different sounds out of the horn on your Volvo or Grand Cherokee? You have the "tap" that you use when you want to "encourage" the driver in front of you who's engrossed in their phone after the light turns green and then you have the "horn" that you hold down when some idiot makes a right on red into your lane without noticing that you're entering the intersection doing the 45 mph that's allowed and you have to slam on your brakes to keep from rear-ending him. The R1S horn is the "tap" sound, even when you hold it down.

They already planned to do so I have heard with the turn signal indicator sound as well and that is very hard to do for the traditional “component-based” car makers. And who knows, maybe some aftermarket companies will start to offer speaker options that make it even more loud and proud.

I can also say that the horn on my 2022 Grand Cherokee isn’t exactly awe-inspiring in my opinion. But honestly, I don’t pay that much attention to it.

Oh - if we could play music through the horn speaker while the vehicle is parked (or, for example, in camping mode) then my tune would change completely: "The horn kinda sucks, but it's really cool that I can play whatever's playing in the infotainment system through it."

Might as well add the ability to link two or more R2's for stereo or surround sound

Also don't limit it to being parked. A bunch of R2 owners might want to get together and play "Ride of the Valkyries" while they're driving down the street.

It actually is changed from R1- very subtly (if that's what you were referring to). The pitch/timbre has been tweaked (based on one of the Youtube design team discussions).

What is a car horn other than a speaker attached to the horn and not a wire to an external speaker? If it does the same think at a similar volume...what would be the issue. If you can change the tone and volume - bonus! just got to keep the speaker clean.

As the OP clarified, it is comparatively not that loud at around 90dB. Many car horns are around 100-110db. Since dB is logarithmic we perceive 110 dB to be roughly 4 times as loud as 90 dB.

90dB is plenty., but compared to many horns, it does sound feeble.

Completely understood. I was just pointing out it is not a speaker problem but a design/software problem.

Well... provided the speaker can handle it. I suspect that they are driving the audio level within the tolerance of the little speaker. Dunno.
