Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
You have about as much chance as anyone. Its clear now Rivian is selecting reservations not just based on date but location and some other factors they are not sharing.
They just started deliveries on June 9th (a little over 2 weeks ago). They’re planning on making 20K-25K R2s by the end of 2026. Next year they hope to be fully ramped and making over 100K R2s by the end of 2027 (I can’t remember the exact production capacity at Normal.)

Deliveries went out to employees first, then some previous R1 owners, people close to service centers, and a potential lottery of some sort. Sounds like a mess to me. You would think they would just go down the line of those who ordered first and ask if they want a Launch Edition. Once you get 20K-$25K of those then move on to the Premium and Standard. Not sure how many of each of those they plan to make next year.

Maybe there was too much concentration in certain areas and they thought the service centers wouldn’t be able to handle it? They need to scale up service or things are going to go sideways quickly, unless they built a really solid vehicle without much maintenance. Someone will know soon enough.

Maximum production capacity is stated to be 215k units per year for all vehicles produced at Normal. This would be running three shifts and presumably also includes some down time, perhaps around summer time next year, for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.

IIRC of that 215k, around 155k were suggested to be R2 production, while ~60k would be for EDV and R1S/T production. So on this basis R2 fully ramped max production would be running at ~50k per shift/year or 12.5k per shift/quarter.

Rivian has guided Wall Street to 20-25k R2 for 2026; I would be surprised if they don't plan to exceed that by ramping the second shift late 3Q/early 4Q to heavily back end load this year's shipments.

Rivian seem to be up to ~2K units so far going by VINs from orders, but that includes shipments to customers in 3Q, so we'll probably get a sanity check on that relatively soon as I expect they will state how many units actually shipped to customers (including employees) in 2Q prior to or as part of their earnings reports.

Thanks for the detailed info! I can’t wait to get my R2. Hopefully next Spring/Summer, unless I win one of those EV raffles. ✌

Good luck on that EV raffle! I don't think they get allocated an R2 any sooner though compared to the rest of us waiting. Assuming you're talking about the CCAN action fund.

Yeah, it says on their website “2nd Prize Winner may choose a Rivian R2 (subject to delivery)…” No cash prize alternative either, but they do pay for all of the taxes. I’m not sure how long they would give you to take delivery. Probably just until the end of the year.

Best worse case scenario I win First Prize and get an R1T Dual in Half Moon Grey and Forest Edge interior or an R1T Tri in Canyon Red. 👀

The EV raffle is just they send the money to Rivian for you. So you will need an order invite yourself.
