I watched a few YouTube videos and some folks mentioned that full self drive is in works and even the current deliveries will get that update in future if they have launch edition . Is that correct ?

IF you want the FSD type self driving, then you need to wait for the R2 with the Lidar sensors. The current model will not get an upgrade via software. It would need the hardware.

Don't spread fake information.....either do some research or don't answer....but your statement is false

Does the Autonomy+ that comes with the Launch Edition cover all these upgrades in "self-driving", or is there going to be a higher level tier that you'll have to subscribe to when it becomes fully "point-to-point"?

RJ said in all these recent R2 videos the current setup can do point to point L2, same as Tesla currently. The Gen3 hardware with RAP1 and LIDAR will be needed for L3 aka eyes off.

Do what you wish with this information.

I think the confusion stems from the OP's use of FSD. Like the rest of the industry, Rivian does not use Tesla made-up nonsense marketing language like FSD (Supervised) aka "Tesla Assisted Driving" in China. Rivian follows the standard SAE nomenclature. So...

1) If by FSD you mean the Tesla HW3 / HW4 Level 2 eyes-on, hands on, driver must be ready at all times to take over immediately supervised system that does not have sufficient hardware capability to ever become more than that then.... the Launch Edition already has all the hardware to handle that and then some.

2) If by FSD you mean the future promised L3 and L4 eyes off system then the RAP1/Lidar version is required.

According to Rivian (and even directly from RJ among other sources) the R2 and Gen2 R1 models WILL have point to point gps address capability (think Tesla FSD) rolling out through a software update in late 2026. They have said over and over that you do not need to wait for the LIDAR/RAP1 equipped models to have this functionality. The R2 that you would currently receive will eventually have this function.

If, however, what you are after is point to point gps address with EYES OFF, in other words, the car drives itself and you can be reading a book or whatever, then you would need to wait for LIDAR/RAP1 and around 2027 - 2029 (EDIT: Others have said Rivian claims this will happen in 2027). Even Tesla is not able to offer that at this point. Their cars can basically do it now but regulators are reluctant to allow this considering they are camera only and have had a few issues.

Rivian really needs to get ahead of this. They seem to be doing a good job of explaining it but people still don't seem to get it. I saw a review from "Kim Java" where she asks this question to RJ, he answers clear as can be, then later in the video she says you will need to wait for the LIDAR/RAP1 if you want autonomy like Tesla currently offers. It's almost hilarious.

Small correction, they said end of 2027 for eyes off. Whether you or I believe that or not is another question entirely!

Yes, this is the confusion. There is the current FSD capability that Tesla has, which is point to point with driver monitoring/eyes on but the car drives itself. And there is what Tesla is trying to transition to which is Robotaxi like/eyes off. Tesla has been allowed to test their robotaxis in some markets with this capability. However, they have not been allowed to sell a car to a private customer (at least not in a widespread way) where this feature is enabled.

What most people want is what Tesla has been offering over the last however many months/years which is simply a car that can drive itself from point to point but requires driver monitoring. Rivian WILL have this in the R2/Gen2 R1 models without needing LIDAR/RAP1 but it will be a software update that is rolled out starting in late 2026. If people want the eyes off FSD capability then you should wait for the LIDAR/RAP1 and it will be a long time before that type of autonomy is available anyway. Or, you can buy a Tesla and hope they get approval soon. But for now, you will need to keep your eyes on even in your Tesla.

I think the FSD with eyes off will be a massive game changer but I see a lot of people say they are going to wait for LIDAR/RAP1 and they don't realize what is actually going on. RJ said it will likely be later in 2027 (or maybe even later, there is some confusion on this) before eyes off is available. The LIDAR/RAP1 equipped vehicles need a lot of miles driven to update/train their LDM AI before that capability will be ready. So if you want the current Tesla FSD and you want the R2 then buy it now and you will have it later this year/early 2027.

I stand corrected then (edited my previous comment). It all gets so confusing. I sincerely hope they hit that timeline!

But what I am not confused about is Rivian is claiming late 2026/early 2027 for Tesla FSD like capability (point to point eyes on) and that is in vehicles without LIDAR/RAP1.
