Of course the Japanese would keep CD players alive. When I lived there (early 2000’s) they had CD and DVD rental places. At the time you could rip any CD to MP3.

When I returned to the US I eventually bought a 2009 Honda Fit with a CD player. I barely used it.

The sound quality of CDs is often cited as being better than lossless streaming though. That’s because the streaming audio is based on remasters, which are often inferior to the original.

He is expecting too much. Only foreign manufactures, such as Kia, have antiquated features such as personal media player, car play, AM/FM radio, HUD, odometer/trip mileage on the driver screen, sunroofs that open - old school features from the last decade.

I actually used a CD in my purchase of my R1T, so I know they are still around, you about have to have a lot of them to afford the Rivian.

Now, in terms of audio, hopefully the R2 will have a better sound system than the Gen 2 R1 vehicles. My R1 did not come with a cassette deck, there was no room for it in the dash because the 8-track takes up too much space.

But with vinyl continuing to make inroads, Rivian is looking at a trim package that might include one of these for the R3

No cd player, USB or memory card. It's streaming, FM or Bluetooth. That's it. Streaming apps are pretty bad, BTW.

Nope. The last seven vehicles I had bought for myself or my kids have not had any physical media playback.

Dating back to 2012 model year vehicles.

Both “new brands” (no Rivian or Tesla has ever had a CD player) and “legacy brands” (BMW, Ford, Subaru.)

(Although humorously, my Ford Mach-E would happily play MP3s from a USB _floppy_ drive.)
