Yes - i thought that was confusing and stupid - first they reused the door switch - instead should have used something appropriate for an overhead with a toggle up for open and down for close. I was one of my first test drive confusions and made me curious about how competent in UI their designers were
It would be illegal for Rivian to do it the other way and sell the cars.

Probably nothing stopping you from pulling the panel down and reversing the leads on the switch though.

This is an interesting thought experiment really. The switch makes perfect sense to me because it functions the same as all other window switches. Pull to open and push to close. I'm not thinking about the orientation of the switch to the Earth's gravity when I activate it, I'm using muscle-memory to pull or push.

At the same time OP's point also makes its own sort of intuitive sense, that the direction of the button in space would follow the direction of the window. But then consider if the switch was mounted vertically on a wall, which direction would perform which action? That would break the reference-frame relationship and you'd be left with only the muscle-memory relationship.

Researching this - apparently the federal government has enforced this stupidity- a rule applying to side door switches for safety reasons (avoiding accidental pressure opening the window) generalizing it to apply anywhere. I think this has been unsuccessfully challenged.

Interestingly there are apparently no issues having the open and close buttons for sunroofs be push-operated. On my 4Runner:

Push to open sunroof
Push to close sunroof

Push to open rear window
Pull to close rear window

Part of me is tempted to reverse the switch, but I know I'll get used to it pretty quickly and ultimately it won't matter once the muscle memory is there.

If you just wait and get a Standard trim, it won't be a problem at all....

Or just wait for the secret project in partnership with Neuralink to be released....you just think about the window going up/down and then, Ta-Da! :D

Why not just put this switch somewhere else, facing up instead of down? Then nobody would have an issue (federal or otherwise).
