I think it shows a sort of institutional integrity at Rivian that you don't see at...ummm...a certain other US EV company that would've happily played the bait-and-switch game with its customers.
I'm no Tesla fan at all.. But Rivian literally bait-n-switched Gen 1 owners. They announced gen3 for the same reason Tesla announces stuff.. To drive news and stock growth As much of a Rivian fan I am, let's not think they care about us, they are a business.

Announcing Gen 3/lidar is causing more "should I wait" discussions online. It's very much an Osborne effect.

I think I am a little surprised to see this poll so high in interest for the LE model. Especially sense I have seen so many people say they wanted to wait for the lidar. I also expected more people to be willing to wait for the more affordable models. I myself will be waiting for the more affordable models.
Don’t underestimate that early Rez holders are already interested AND early Rez holders AND members of an online message board / forum are REALLY interested.

Will probably get the LE. Demand will outstrip supply until production ramps up to 2 shifts late this year assuming things are going as planned.

Can always sale it for a decent price if I want a Lidar/RAP1 chip next yr or so. A good autopilot like performance is what I use. FSD like feature is not important to me at this time. I love driving.

We have a R1S gen 1 quad and Model 3 LR now. Will get rid of the Tesla and get the R2. Got the Model 3 for about 4 yrs and the original warranty will expire in May. Been pretty good, no major issues. Just rattles and door queaks.

There is a vocal minority who really want Lidar. The launch package includes at least $3k worth of content (tow package and autonomy subscription) that makes the extra performance and suspension upgrade (and availability of purple and launch green) a no brainer for $1k above the Premium. If you want lidar you will need to opt for the autonomy subscription to get the benefit and it seems more for L4 which is years away. Enhanced gen 2 ADAS will provide what most people want - hands free unmapped driving on highways.

It does feel like L4 isn't going to be for years. Plus it seems that Rivian is able to do point to point driving with the cameras and radar on the Gen 2 systems.

Exactly so I am unsure about this rush for LiDAR but everyone will make their own decision.

The non-LiDAR R2 units will benefit from the LiDAR units learning. Stated by Rivian Autonomy employee in interview. I posted a link to it previously. There are subjective reasons to wait for it and there are subjective reasons to not wait for it. Very much a personal decision.

I'm in for the LE, ideally a good leasing offer. And hopefully with the cloud interior. Normally purchasing makes sense for me, but for a LE, leasing lowers my risk on an unproven model.

Unfortunately, no leasing in WI where I live. Otherwise, I agree with you.
Sorry im new to Rivian. I thought R2 was coming out with lidar but i guess it will not be present until later in the year with no retrofit. Does lidar help with anything else other than auto drive? Im planning on leasing the R2 but by the time they workout the kinks on the feature i may be halfway through my lease so probably worth it just to get the launch edition and then after lease is done jump into a R3. What are your thoughts?

If range is really that important to you, the BMW iX350 is an interesting competitor. Similar prices, more range, faster changing (which means zero to me)

My thoughts exactly. I currently plan to lease the LE. I'll decide on 3 years if I want to "trade up"... Which includes giving up the free autonomy+.

I believe, and could be wrong, that LiDAR provides little to no benefit to the individual. LiDAR benefits the entire fleet, including non LiDAR units. There are "fringe cases" where LiDAR is better though.

Personally, I don't plan to use autonomous driving except on highway commutes, so it's a non issue for me.

Exactly what o see as well that little benefit for the individual but benefits the fleet. If you just want hands free safe driving on the highway then current planned enhanced Gen 2 ADAS is more than adequate.

Other than data gathering, I don't believe lidar provides any other benefit (in addition to auto driving, as you put it).
My gen 2 r1T (no lidar) will be capable of point to point driving (which i believe will be equivalent/similar to tesla fsd), at least according to Rivian.
