I've said before that I'm likely to cancel my R2 reservation but I've been slowly rethinking it. I may just trade my R1T for the R2.
That's what I'm doing.
  • Don't really need a truck, opted for T to get it earlier and lower cost
  • My T is rapidly approaching warranty expiration and cost of repairs for R2 should be a major improvement
  • Rear seat space much better for hauling kids
  • Roll down rear window!

What do you pull on? Seems hard to do while driving.
Yeah, not that hard. The wheels protrude in a way you can hit it with your middle fingers from behind like shift paddles. As a gamer that also has a haptic feedback controller, I'm excited because it really is cool and makes a difference.

Why the camo? The R2 looks very similar to the R1 and there are plenty of photos of the prototypes making the rounds. Camo looks cool though.

I wonder where they will be located. I’m next to the Irvine HQ. I’ll keep an eye out! If I find one, I’ll track it down for pics!

More likely in Death Valley for heat testing!

Any word if the R2 will for sure have just 400v charging?

If validation testing is starting, it probably means this spec is set in stone

From what they said, it is to hide smaller details they are not ready to reveal yet (they have made small modifications. How small, who knows. They also said that it is just an automotive tradition. They also use the wrap to see how it will affect cameras and sensors as people will wrap the cars once they have them and it helps with some other testing.

Edited to clarify:
My understanding is that Rivian stockpiled a substantial number of batteries from its current Chinese and Korean suppliers to be used for the R2 at launch. The longer-term plan is for the R2 to quickly transition to the larger and more advanced 4695 batteries produced at the new LG Energy Solution (LGES) facility in AZ as soon as that plant is up and running, which I think is late 2026. My recollection is that what I recall reading indicated that planned R2 battery pack with the 4695 cells may be capable of charging at up to 800v.

So the answer may be the the early editions of the R2 will have battery packs that are still limited to 400v but that later edtions with the US-made LGES batteries should have higher voltage capability.

They are doing it to bring attention to them, not to hide anything.

No, individual cells do not charge at 800V. An 800V battery pack is a function of the module and pack architecture and how many cells are connected in series. An individual 4695 cell charges at somewhere around 4.2V.
