What is the (completely unqualified) opinion of the group regarding the initial resale market for the R2 launch editions? It's a very different world since 2022, but many of us remember the random parking lot offers for $100k+ on our LE R1s. Some here even took those offers...

So, what's the likelihood of people paying a premium for R2 LEs in the first 6 months? Anyone here without an early R1 willing to say what they'd pay for an early R2?

Yes, I'm aiming for the third rail.

I don’t think there’s any reason for paying a markup. There will be many capable EVs hitting the market at the same time, and I think there will be a good number of R2s in the Rivian Shop soon enough

I'd expect stronger than average resale for the class for the LE but trying to sell over sticker or doing a flip won't result in anything worth that hassle. Maybe a few thousands over MSRP at first but as with all these situations, hype will die down and production will ramp so people willing to pay over sticker to skip the line would be few and far between. I wouldn't bank on this strategy.

Won’t be anything like R1.

R1 launched with the hype of the entire brand behind it.

Anyone who was too late to the party with enough curiosity and money would pay whatever necessary to have the Rivian experience and bragging rights of the first Rivian in their city/ town/ neighborhood / friend groups. Not to mention this was also marketed as a premium class vehicle to a pool of very well qualified buyers.

R2 has the hype, however there’s a ceiling before a buyer just goes for a new or lightly used R1.

We’re predicting a few early cars to hit the market / run in the auction at around $10,000 above initial MSRP. However, we anticipate this only being the case for the first 30-45 days of customer deliveries.

Once the dust settles, we’re predicting R1 to continue to hold strong and R2 to be among the highest resale values in segment with strong lease offers mostly due to strong residuals.

May cause a slight initial dip on R1S demand / sales at first for some getting out of R1S leases for R2 (instead of another R1) However, in a short enough period of time, everything will find its correct place in the wholesale market.

Not to mention R2 playing a significant role introducing even more people to the Rivian brand and organically boosting R1 sales / wholesale Rivian values.

No resale premium; the R1 & CT were able to do this as top-tier vehicles with a lot of hype behind them. The R2 is arguably a better deal than the R1, but not a better vehicle. I suspect that anyone willing to pay extra for an early R2 would prefer to purchase a Gen2 R1; I know I would.
There's also the second factor unique to the R2 in that 6+ months, the Gen3 R2S will be available, and lots of R2 reservation holders are reportedly waiting for that to happen before buying.

Also consider that the typical R2 buyer will be shopping a lower price point which will inherently cap how much over market they are willing to pay. Sure, some people with deeper pockets will want something smaller than the R1 or with a conventional suspension but I just don't see much of a flippers market any more.

There will always be fools with too much $. But given planned production numbers, flipping will probably be short lived.

I'm guessing you might be able to drive it basically for free for 1-3months for very early delivery and get your money back.

I don't see the opportunity to flip an R2 like a Bronco, MachE, or Maverick.

It's going to be a regularly produced EV and there just isn't enough instant I have to have it now demand. For an existing Rivian owner on this site, absolutely flip away, but we probably all have reservations by now, maybe ahead of you.

Were people flipping Mavericks? I flipped an F150 Lightning in 2022 after driving both it and my Rivian for a week and being much happier with the latter. But as others stated, bigger/higher vehicles/pricetags attract a different market than the RAV4 competitor that is R2.

RAV4 primes were doing 10/15k+ mark up by dealerships as recent as a few years post covid.

After our 2024 RAV4 Prime with 20k miles was totaled this past February, we got a little more than we paid (after $6500 cash to lease). When I was researching the market for comparables, there were some used that were 5-10k over the upcoming 2026 Prime refresh price!
