Ran out of battery for the first time

The main reason I didn't go to an ER was just bc it was late and I didn't want to sit in an ER just to be told to go to an ortho the next day. So I went to a walk in ortho this morning. Figured I would be in a little pain but wouldn't really do any additional damage if I just went home and went to bed.

Ouch, glad you found a plug and that explains why you didn't push it the last 500 yards.

I managed to break my arm playing tag at a middle school art show. Friend's mom drove me home (as planned) and the next morning I told my parents I thought it was broken. Scheduled an ortho appointment and went to school, came back mid day in a cast much to the confusion of my friends and teachers.

Not that I suggest it, and your mileage may vary (pun intended), but I got about 6 miles after the point I hit 0 miles. I got about 500 yards from my house when the car totally disabled and made me pull over. Luckily I was in front of my neighbor's house (only two houses on the entire several mile road), so I was able to just run an extension cord to their 110v outlet and charge it up! Not only does it take forever to charge with 110v normally, but it was like 20 degrees out, and with it being completely dead dead, it did take like 4-5 hours for me to even get 1 mile of charge to drive it home.

Twas a rainy winter night on the interstate, towing Airstream, estimated range hit 0 (first long tow, learning curve in effect - adverse wind, temp.) Fast Charger station 2 miles ahead on opposite side of hwy, in Travel Plaza with attached RV park. R1T goes into reduced power as I hit the off ramp (thankfully down grade). Carefully rolled through stop signs, crossed under hwy, eased into RV park (thankfully a modern facility attached to the Travel Plaza, nearly empty, just choose a site) and eased into a site. Plugged the R1T into the 50A pedestal. Whew! Learning curve advanced in one big lucky leap.
Instant contingency plan (the mind works quickly in such situations) was to pull off hwy and charge R1T from the 6kW Ecoflow Power Station setup in the Airstream, good for about 3 mi/hr charging. Thankfully not needed.

At least you didn’t need to “try roadside assistance “. I got pretty close to dead on my T once. 0% with 0 miles remaining isn’t a confident feeling but I made it back to my garage thankfully….though I did turn off climate control and truck didn’t want to go up hills at all.

I did call them actually. They answered surprisingly quickly but I quickly realized they couldn't help me. I had a tractor all ready to tow me home the additional 500 yards and could not figure out how to put it in neutral to tow. The guy told me "you can't tow it, you need a tow truck with dollys." I was like ah okay, then he's like "so call a tow truck, nothing else you need me to do. bye" lol

Had the same thing happen to my friends R1S, ran out of battery, zero, nada.. Luckily there was an EA about 200 yards away behind a motel in Mojave Ca..phone lit up “call tow truck now” all in red, we did but realized it would take longer as they didn’t want to deal with an EV. We even tried hooking it into a generator that we carry for camping to get something, nope. So we gambled and limped to the EA kiosk…

Car wash mode might have allowed you to put it in neutral.
I have also seen some YouTube videos where someone had pull-charged a Rivian. I'm sure that Rivian doesn't recommend it. I just remembered that they pull-charged a Rivian in "The Long Way Up."

Many of you are braver than we are. We got to single digits left in our 2 1/2 year old R1T and barely crawled into our garage. If I remember right it cut power with like 15 miles left. Now my wife wants close to 50 miles of cushion when we travel. We did get down to 28 miles of range left in SD once too. Very few chargers there so it was a little nerve racking.

This is an interesting thread. I have my R1T, we just reserved an R2S to replace my husbands 2015 Nissan Rogue. He is NOTORIOUS for driving it until the "Low Fuel" warning comes up; frequently until way after the "Mileage to Empty" stops registering. On a few occasions, the engine would be bucking and wheezing as we would pull into the gas station.

An EV is going to be an interesting learning curve for him.

Does the charge port door auto open when it runs out of juice as a last gasp or are all the electronics still functioning inside since they're off the 12V and just the HV is dead and you cannot drive?

That will be interesting. In our case my wife has range anxiety with our EV but our ICE car she never even looks at the gas gauge and runs it down to zero miles left at times.

A friend ran out of power in his Bolt, it was on a highway so no where close to plug in and charge. He had one of his kids tow him back home for a couple of miles which recharged the battery enough that he was able to drive it home in his neighborhood thereby avoiding the "tow of shame" to his house
