RAN Waypoint charge speed (Inyokern + Bishop)

SoCal R1S checking in - 20A/Ts and a roof rack w/a luggage bag. I'm curious for some direct experience with the charge rates for Inyokern and Bishop, if anyone's done it yet. With my setup I think I need hefty charge amounts at both place. I've got the whole family loaded and want to know how reliably I can charge fast. I've been stalking both locations for the last few days and it seems like they're usually open, so all that's left is real-world reports of fill speed. If it matters I think I'm interested in "all the way to 100%" charge times (Bishop to Truckee is 215 miles with like 4k feet of gain so I want to hit that leg with a full battery).

Can’t speak to the charge rates, but I’m going to be THAT guy: Rivian Adventure Network and Rivian Waypoints are different things. RAN is the Level 3 DC fast charging network equivalent to Tesla’s Supercharger network.

Waypoints are L2 AC chargers equivalent to Tesla’s Destination Chargers.

For what it’s worth you might save a few bucks with your plan but you would have a faster trip if you just stopped to charge at the EA station in Bridgeport and forego the ’charge to 100%’

However long it takes you to get to 85%, double that, and you’ll get to 100%. It doesn’t matter the network. Charging above that point is incredibly slow (like, level 2 speeds), and really not advised unless there are no other charging options. It’s not limited by the charger, it’s limited by the battery.

My charge speeds at Inyokern and Bishop peaked at 218kw and were usually well above 180kw most of the time. One of the chargers in Inyokern wasn't working at the time i went but had no problems at the other ones.

I went to 90% in Bishop and it took about an hour which it really slowing down after 80 - 85%. If you really plan to go to 100% you should expect and hour and a half to two hours.

I used Bishop and Inyokern RAN a little over a week ago to/from Mammoth. I started at home at 100% and charged at Inyokern and Bishop on the way there. Both stops were around 30-45 mins. I was planning to charge in the Village so Bishop was a shorter stop on the way up.

On the way back, I started off at 100% (free charging if you're staying at the Village), skipped Bishop and charged at Inyokern from around 30% to around 70% which was more than enough to get home.

I noticed that charging ramped up to around 215kw and slowed down from there. The charging "countdown" time was generally stuck on an hour to full charge regardless of whether it was at 215kw or 100kw. On these three RAN charging stops, I made it the goal to leave once the charger dropped to below 100kw. By that time, I was near 70-80% charge and had more than enough of a cushion to reach the next RAN and/or the charger at the Village.

Actually... super helpful. I didn't realize the difference and this now explains why Inyokern is on the map twice:
* 2 [slow] Waypoints [11kW rated]
* 6 [fast] RAN chargers [218kW rated]

Great. I am happy to help. Would recomend the Pass+ membership too, at $4/mo you save 0.12/kWh which pays for itself with one charge on a Rivian. If you only infrequently road trip you can cancel and start at will without commitment.

Regarding your trip I did most of that route this summer (before Truckee was open). I charged in Inyokern and then Bishop. I'm sure I didn't charge above 80% and arrived in Bridgeport at about 40% SOC then charged to about 70% and easily made it to the southern shore of Tahoe where I had a hotel, I used EA in South Lake Tahoe and went towards Sacramento. You'll probably want to be a little more conservative in the winter temps/weather and charge a little more but like others have said charging to 100% is time prohibitive.

Add chargepoint, evgo, abrp, and plugshare to the list of things you need to set up.

Then before your trip make sure to check everything to make sure all the stations you are relying on are functional.

Love the tips! Any more you can tell me about how you check that stations are working? I understand and see occasional user reports about issues, but at scale along a route "check the forums" isn't necessary an efficient process, you know?

Plugshare is the gold standard.

Plan your trip with ABRP. Look at the map and try to identify any backup charging locations.

Then before your trip, check weather and adjust range estimates as necessary (head winds, rain, etc).

Day before and day of, check plugshare and the charger specific apps for the chargers you identified. If there are any issues, plan accordingly (allow extra time if a few stalls are down, or reroute to your backup chargers as identified previously)
