Anyone know why they didn't just make the rear doors operate like the front ones? The front ones are mechanically linked to the latch which means there is no difference in function regardless of whether there is 12v available.

for those worried about accessibility in a true emergency, is there a downside apart from aesthetics to just removing the panel and leaving the pull cord exposed? tape the thing to to panel if it rattles maybe? not a perfect solution by any stretch, but alleviates part of the problem. buy some new clips when it is time to sell.

Nobody will find this in an emergency. I'm not saying the release needs to have hideous warning labels to draw attention to it, but it should be intuitive for someone who believes they are in danger and needs to get out immediately.

Rivian isn't alone on this though. Look how obscure the rear door releases are in a Model S:

My Model S has mechanical latches on all doors. Not an issue.

My Model Y has very conspicuous mechanical door latches on front doors only. Have an idea as to where emergency manual openers on rear doors are located, but in an emergency, might as well climb over or around the front seats to get out lest you run out of time finding latch and figuring out how to use it. Or just kick the door window right out.

I'd test that. Both my 2015 and 2019 Model S had the hidden carpet release for the rear seats, and your 2020 would have been basically identical to my 2019. The manual is identical, anyway:

https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/...To open a rear door, the center of the vehicle.

The "mechanical" door lever in the rear is actually just a switch and is not connected to anything.

The problem is that anyone not intimately familiar with these vehicles will not know how to open a back door that should otherwise appear to operate. The normal door open lever is just a red herring.

This is what I will do if I decide to get a G2 Quadmax. I can't live with a safety risk as big as this for my passengers in the rear seats.

Great question....if I had been on the team that made this decision I would put my position on the line to defend treating the rear seats exactly same as fronts.

Edit...just want to make sure it is clear I do not work for Rivian and this is personal opinion only.
