I am due to get my R1T next month and I know Rivian will handle the registration but I wanted to ch do about the requirement to have your vehicle inspected within 10 days.

I assume you can to to any state inspection location that is willing to work on the truck and will issue the inspection sticker even though the vehicle will be on temporary tags. Anything else to consider or am I missing anything?

When I picked up my R1T on November 5, it had a temporary Illinois registration. I got my Pa tags and registration right around 3-4 weeks later, right around Thanksgiving, and inspected at week or so after that in early December at https://davicosautorepair.com/reservations/ in Wayne, no issues. I could be wrong, but I didn't think you can actually get a PA inspection sticker until you physically have your PA plates and registration. And FYI, if you are trading in another car, the plates from that may not transfer over to a R1T, I ended up with a Truck specific plate for Pennsylvania (traded in Acura RDX). Any licensed shop should be able to do an inspection, but some don't want to deal with EVs. Of course, as EVs become more common, maybe more are willing to do it.

Thanks this is very helpful. So I go to get registration only after I get my PA plates. I had read a ten day requirements but that could be from when you get plates.

Picked up my R1T in December, still haven't gotten it inspected. I'm going to get some tires balanced and rotated, so I'll probably do it then. But I've had my Tesla for 2 years and never got it inspected. I was lazy and didn't want to call around finding a shop I trusted to jack up the vehicle properly, and cops don't seem to notice as much if there's no inspection vs an obviously expired one.

So I'm not saying don't get it inspected, just saying don't panic about the whole 10 day thing, take your time and find a place you trust, and make sure you get the jack pucks and hand it to the shop and show them how to use them if they're not familiar with EVs.

Thanks, this is good to know. I had been worried about the ten day limit but that seems more flexible. I do find it odd that a new car needs a safety or emission test since it would of course pass. They should not require the inspection until say 2 years old.

Yea, I'd call it a money grab honestly. I believe NJ gives a 5 year exemption on new vehicles, money is the only reason I can think that PA wouldn't do something similar, but c'est la vie.

The inspection gets recorded referencing the vehicle registration, which also references the VIN. Inspection is also a direct way to force compliance of state registration. Otherwise you could register once to get a plate, but never renew the registration.

i bought our X3d from a Maryland BMW Dealer. It slipped my mind to get inspection done, it was 8 months until I got it inspected.

I picked up mine in Oct. still haven’t done the inspection. Was actually wondering exactly how that was supposed to work. Didn’t realize PA was ridiculous and required brand new vehicles to get inspected…not from the area originally…oh well I’ll take care of it eventually. Just got the windshield ceramic tinted…will need one of those pouches/sticker pads so the sticker doesn’t ruin the tint when the sticker gets taken off in a year.
