So I have been nickle and diming my options during this whole wait until Jul / Sept. In Ohio we have a relatively new 200 full EV registration fee. I got wind of it before I had to renew my volt and that year and I did a 5 year renewal to skip the fee for the hybrid which is like 150 fee each year for 5 years.

My question is has anyone tried to transfer plates in this situation? Perfect world I would transfer the 3 years I have left on that plate to the rivian. I'm thinking they are going to add it on though as a registration process. I'm not 100% sure if they do on a plate transfer situation where I have paid for the plate / registration already for 5 years on previous car.

Thoughts?

Quit nickel and diming on an $80k purchase.

Also, pay your damn taxes.
Sheesh a simple question - I don't mind an EV fee but I believe ohio has one of the highest ones in the country. 75-to 150 ok - but 200 sheesh. ALSO, I have my rav 4 ev I DO pay the 200 on and If I sold that and transferred - DO I HAVE to pay another 200 fee when I would of paid that 200 JUST in June for that renewal when I get my r1s in JULY (hopefully)??? You see - THESE are valid questions - do I get double charged?

Thanks for being helpful. Sometimes forums just suck to try to get an answer.

The Volt is considered a PHEV/EV, so it has the $200 per year fee for registration. If you are transferring plates that have had the fee paid on them and the vehicle will be registered the same as the plates, then you will not need to pay the fee again. However, if the vehicle is registered different (couple on previous vehicle and only single on the Rivian or vice versa), then you need to pay the fee again. Unfortunately/Fortunately, I am well versed in the Ohio fees on EV's after owning a few different EV's in Ohio.

Your question is incredibly specific and I don't think we have any Ohio BMV experts here. Perhaps give them a call or chat on Monday?

And don't forget to donate your organs while you're at it!
This was a good suggestion - I'll give you that.

No problem. We've had a couple different scenarios, so it's best to keep the registration the same if you've already paid the fee for the year. Then you just have to pay like $6.50 or something to transfer the plates over.

I’d say see if your DMV has an FAQ for this scenario or call them. You can’t be the first person with this question/situation. Good luck!
