Rivian should keep their eye on the prize and optimize battery tech/charging curve vs chase every squirrel (Ebikes, targa roof, stripper poles, etc)...

Hold it now. Don't get too hasty here. Speak to me of this stripper pole you therefor mention

It's okay to like & support Rivian and disagree with some of their decisions. When people's deliveries are getting pushed back again and again and again, it's fair to question why they're introducing an option that requires significant testing, that most won't use, rather than focusing on getting preorders out.
Even though this particular thread is new this planned feature is not. We've known about the removable roof option since at least fall of 2020. This means that the truck was already designed with the idea of having a removable roof option.

It's not like Rivian is just now dedicating engineering and design resources to offer something new and unplanned while orders sit around unfilled. There's also a possibility that the roof panels will be produced by a supplier (like the Bronco) and not directly by Rivian itself.

I have a two door soft top Wrangler. It's a great second vehicle. But not necessarily what I want to commute everyday in, or take on an extended road trip. I usually don't take the top down, just take the back and sides off, safari style, top off can be too much sun for me. I do plan on keeping the Wrangler when the Rivian arrives, at least for now. I would probably prefer the Rivian with a solid metal roof also, no glass whatsoever.
I tried top down and lasted like 1 mile on the freeway before pulling over. I would have taken the windows off, but there's no good way to store them. It's also crazy that you really can't secure the back area at all.

I’m not a car expert but don’t see where a removable glass roof changes a whole lot in production. I have no desire for that option anyway, because I have no clue where I’d store the glass, nor do I want to deal with the frequent unplanned rain events on the gulf coast.

What kind of "removable roof" are you thinking of?

- Targa top (drivers only?, driver and 2nd row?)
- T Top
- Rag top (some form of)
- Complete hard top that removes (which will require added roll bar(s))

Frankly, it probably will end up being a novel option that they probably won't sell many of (because it will be an expensive option). I see this feature offering nothing more than distraction for the company.

Planning to come out of retirement with the second career you always dreamed of? ;)

Kidding aside, I want the roof that is least likely to leak after 20 years.

For folks wondering, they appear to have removed the reference to a future removable roof.

That's a shame for us, but I'm happy they are streamlining and focusing on getting product out the door.

The panoramic sunroof is probably the one thing I'll miss from my Model S when I finally sell it. It's never given me trouble, we use it 4-6 months of the year, and it's no longer available. This seemed like a nice option.

But at least this feature was mostly for occasional fun. If they'd started dropping colors (like a certain other EV manufacturer), I'd be a lot less happy.
