Rivian and jackstands

Getting ready to take delivery shortly and was planning on getting my wheels powder coated. My plan was to put the truck on jackstands in the garage then take the wheels to the powdercoat company. Didn’t think much about it until now but how/where could I put jackstands while utilizing a floorjack at the same time?

You can either buy jack adapter pucks (made by an aftermarket co.), or you can take off the plastic underbody covers located near the jacking points and lift from the frame. I haven't verified the second part, but that is what I was told by a Rivian employee neighbor as I looked under his R1S tester. I'll be in the same boat as you, so I'm curious on how it works out for you.

I think OP’s problem is that there’s only one jack point per corner. You put the jack in the corner, you lift the vehicle, then you have nowhere to put the jack stand because the jack is in the way.

This is a common problem on new cars. Sometimes you can get away with jacking on a crossmember or differential. I don’t know that there’s a good option on the Rivian.

I bought a Quickjack. That’s a great option if you can swing it.

Also have the quickjacks 7000SLX that I use for all of my ICE cars, but still not sure how I will lift Rivian R1S when I get it. When my neighbor brings another tester, or he gets his R1, I'll take a better look underneath.

Yeah, I only have the 5000. Good for the racecar, but not even close for the Rivian.

I guess it’s time to just get a real lift ?

Shops should have “tall” posts for their lifts (usually they come with short/reg/tall posts that can be easily swapped). The problem many shops will have is plastic covers must be removed to access the lift points on the R1T/S And they require several tools (not sure why Rivian couldn’t use ONE) to remove. This isn’t “hard’, of course, but it does take specialized knowledge of the R1 platform — which most generic shops won’t have — and will take extra time, which most shops won’t like.

Rivian service centers will most likely have custom pins that can slot into the skateboard without removing the plastic covers. There’s been a thread or two showing aftermarket pins that work with floor jacks. I’ll be buying a set for my own use. It may be wise to obtain and bring a set with you when getting service at a shop that isn’t Rivian, too.

As far as how to lift a R1 in your own garage and safety put it on jackstands, I can think of two methods;

1) use a product like rennstands. These are special jack stands that provide access to a floor jack to life via the same lift point.
2) put the floor jack under the lower control arm, which leaves the frame lift point free for the jack stand. This is how I lift my current vehicles. I use a rubber puck on top of my floor jack to provide a no-slip surface and better interface between the floor jack and the non-flat control arm.

Page 189 of the manual covers lifting it. It's hard to tell but it looks like there is a decent sized area of frame rail that you can use to lift. Might be enough room to slide a jack stand next to the jack?

Marketing materials say the normal underbody is strong enough to carry the weight of the Rivian while protecting the battery pack. Wasn’t it able to carry the weight on one square inch? Reinforced was even better. Ipso facto, you could jack it from anywhere underneath. Not recommending, just saying.

I want the $3500 20” black chrome wheels but currently have the $1800 20” bright wheels configured.

I was thinking about powder coating all 5 of the bright wheels black chrome ($600) but deciding if it’s worth the hassle.

It works out to around $700 by the time I dismount the tires, take the rims to a PC company, pick them up and have the tires remounted and balanced on the wheels and put them back on the truck.

So $1800 + $700 = $2500. I am not sure it’s worth the hassle to save $1k.

I'd just use the puck on a jack. Remove the plastic panels, jack it up, put jack stands under the blank spots left by the plastic panels, and I'm good.

I personally jacked up the truck using the lower control arms. Didn't have jack pucks yet when I swapped out the wheels. Have them now, but still think its easier jacking up from the lower control arms since they're lower and you don't have to jack up beyond the suspension travel. Need a pretty tall jack to jack these things up from the jacking puck locations.

I'd have to look again, but since I was able to get a jack safely under the control arms, assuming I could put jack stands there too. Not sure there's a way to put a jack stand in the pace of the jacking puck, being the way jack stands are shaped. So my guess, from experienced with jacking it up would be to jack it up with the jacking pucks, then put the jack stands under the control arms and set down on those.
