“Terrible” is a subjective and minority opinion as the poll OP quoted proves. In other words if you don’t like them, don’t buy a Rivian.

The Jeep headlights look “terrible“ to many. The BMW grill looks “terrible” to many. It hasn’t stopped them from succeeding.

I had asked Rivian Design and Marketing to follow this thread. They have agreed to change the design to pick you up as a customer. The caveat is that if one person starts a thread complaining on the new design, they will switch back.

Round headlights like the van would be a nice nod to the offroad capability, since so many iconic boxy 4x4 vehicles had/have that design language (Land Cruiser, Bronco, Jeep, Land Rover, etc). The current design has grown on me though and I’ve heard a lot of people say they love it.

For 35 years round headlights were the only legal shape in the US.

For all intents and purposes EVERY vehicle sold in the US had round headlights, it's not a signifier of anything other than "this was a car that was sold in the US before 1975."
