Has anyone else noticed that there? Rivian is now missing (not seeing) some speed limit signs? It especially seems to have trouble reading those with a yellow diamond around them. Gen 2. Latest software.

In the Northwest, a speed limit sign inside a yellow diamond sign means the speed will change soon -- but not yet.

Perhaps Rivian has trouble deciphering the different signage systems used in different states.

***

My understanding is that Rivian doesn't primarily use speed limit signs anyway -- too much danger if the computer sees, for example, a frontage-road limit sign of 25 mph and abruptly slows a Rivian in the main freeway as a response.

Relying on signs, without knowing what a human knows about context, could be very dangerous.

Best to all!

Yellow diamonds aren't speed limits, they are recommended speeds.

Rivians do use cameras to "see" the speed limit signs I think. Perhaps they use the navigation maps settings too? They have always had trouble with certain types of signs, like ones that are digital or temporary. The school zone signs don't register, which is unfortunate.

They definitely use the cameras to read speed signs. The speed limit on the driver’s display updates just after passing the sign. This also seems to work well with digital signs from my experience. The Rivian also has a database of mapped speeds. Passing a sign with a different speed than the mapped speed causes an update that is only persistent for approximately 30 seconds, after which the speed limit display reverts to the database speed if no subsequent sign has been observed.

Heck, even Tesla still misses some speed signs on the freeway, especially those posted higher than usual or when they are in pairs, speed for trucks and cars. My R1S seemed to work mostly well.

In Lincoln City, Oregon there is a short section of Hwy 101 that identifies as 70 MPH. I’ve never tested the theory, however, as the posted speed limit is 35 MPH.

This behavior infuriates me. Their map data is crap, and they keep overriding the ground truth sign data with map data that is over 5 years old.

The vehicle should detect the discrepancy and display either the sign reader data, or no data at all until the signs match the data again.

They should also use the sign reader data to update the map.

I'm using this next time I get a speeding ticket. Currently working on my defensive driving for one and 90-day probation on another. I'm not sure I needed a 835hp car.

Washington State just lowered speed limits on US-101 at the outskirts of Chinook, Washington from 55 mph to 45 mph. They posted the signs this week.

Our R1T already displays the new 45-mph speed limit correctly.

Neither of our Rivians knows that the speed limit on US-101 north of Ilwaco is 35 mph for about a half mile. That has displayed as 45 mph on the driver's screen since we bought our Rivians.

Based on these observations, I suspect Rivian is working from a geolocated database of speed limits, provided by states, that may or may not match the signs on the actual highway.

Best to all!

It's definitely using both vision and a database. I see speed limit changes that don't coincide with sign locations all the time, and I have correlated them to data from OSM. It also 'sees' some very specific signs that are not part of the OSM database (one in particular is a 50mph sign for an adjacent highway from a 35mph surface street) using computer vision.

Under what circumstances would the truck slow down due to posted speed limits? This is not something I expect to happen and it never has in my experience. If it can happen I want to make sure I have that setting disabled, but I am pretty sure thats not a thing.

Rivian definitely reads speed limit signs. Driving west on Hwy 50 in the winter from Lake Tahoe to Sacramento and it's not uncommon for the Rivian to show 25mph in a 55mph zone just before Strawberry. In this area, the speed is definitely 55 and there's one lane going down and two coming up the hill. In the winter time this area is used as a chain control/install space, and when chain control is not in effect, CalTrans spins the sign around so it is visible going downhill, not up. The Rivian picks up this obscure sign even though it's over 2 lanes away.
