The reasons are varied, of course. The point wasn’t that Tesla owners didn’t use Superchargers—clearly they do—but that they don’t camp out at the charger and load up to 80% (or more) each time, the way folks do at EA dispensers. If you watch the cars, there are many who pull in, take on power for 10 minutes, and then are on their way.

Because so many Hyundai, Kia, Lyric, and MB owners are on “free” charging status with their cars as a benefit from their purchase/lease deal, these folks often occupy a space to charge up to 100%, and of course take a hour to do so. That is big reason why getting power at an EA location is such a rugby scrum—I have to imagine many of the folks loading up to 90% or 100% could charge overnight at home, but they’re determined to get the most “free” power they can.

You can make your own Punch Buggy game when you go to an EA location, and take bets on whether there will be more Ionic 5, Cadillac Lyric, or Mercedes EQB cars charging and waiting (combined).

I doubt they leave them plugged in all night. Idle charges kick in after 10 minutes of completion. Depending on where you are those might be ride share drivers, apartment dwellers that can’t charge at home or people on a trip passing through. Does seem weird for the station to be that busy at 7:30 am. Maybe it’s cheaper that early. A lot of places they have different rates at different times.
I recall reading a few months ago that it was a crisis in NYC for Superchargers because the city had mandated clean air vehicles, which led to a lot of rideshare drivers leasing Teslas. And without a residence where L2 charging was possible, all these new Teslas were added to the local NACS population without a commensurate increase of Supercharger locations. It has apparently caused havoc with long lines waiting for a slot.

Some of this happened prior to the time Musk had his hissy fit about layoffs and fired the entire Supercharger team, even though the team was a profit driver for Tesla. It caused a delay in all projects, with a planned megasite in Brooklyn for Superchargers said to be one which was affected. Many of those Tesla owners were counting the days for some relief and found no assistance was coming.

The lack of information is kind of frustrating. I took delivery of my R1T in March of 2023. I opted in. I have not received any information thus far. I have emailed them multiple times and they could not even confirm that I was on the list to receive one.

I'm an early adopter but was in Portland OR a couple weeks ago and used my adapter for the first time. Very fast and cheaper than EA or others. If you travel it is worth having.
