If you were making this argument for compass yellow, you’d have a much stronger case. Have you seen these companies’ branding? Verizon has red in their logo. Apple’s logo is white. I don’t know about Microsoft, but Xbox certainly is all about the green, just like PlayStation is blue. All their materials and websites are predominantly designed with these colors. Where on Rivian’s website or logo do you see even a drop of blue (except in the configurator)? Their logo and branding is primarily yellow, with white and black as the complements.

Also worth mentioning that on the product side, companies cannot aim to achieve a ubiquitous product color (e.g apple’s white iPod or AirPods) by up charging for it. It has to be the norm, not the exception. So on both counts, I’m not seeing the blue having a strong case for being rivian’s color.
Except the blue is called “Rivian Blue”.

The yellow is also special to the brand as it’s called ”Compass Yellow” and the Rivian logo is referred to as the “compass”.

? they can call it that and say it’s special, but if it’s the most expensive color choice, it’s not on their branding, and there isn’t any other reason why it’s “their” color other than the fact that RJ likes it, it will not become ubiquitous for the brand.

You make some great points. So why is yellow an upcharge? (I'm currently in the yellow camp)

I loved the “Very Orange” color on my old Tesla Roadster.

I think a burnt orange color on the Rivian would look great (although my first choice would be matte black, but that’s only in a wrap at this point).

And yet you think Compass Yellow should be there color, but...
So why is yellow an upcharge?

Heh, team yellow will never be big. If we look at cars on the typical road, a majority of folks seem to like tame colors apparently, or else automakers believe they do.

I like to get cars with color. I went with Launch Green because it was unknown and free. If I did not have to pay extra, it would have been yellow. I would have been all over an orange.
I think car manufacturer have always been cautious (and cheap) with colors.
Now that the in thing is to charge extra, they are adding 'fun' colors.

The best color (Prism Blue) I ever had was on the 96 Eagle Talon TSi I had. It was dark blue/black in the dark, blue in full sun, and purplish in shade. Smashed it in bad weather and a national autobody shop could not match paint. Luckily Insurance company allowed me to switch it over to a local shop that did a better job matching it, but it was never the same. :(

Yes, boom indeed, yellow won’t be the most popular color either because of the upcharge. I wasn’t implying otherwise. All I said was if Rivian were actually thinking about a signature color, it should be compass yellow and not blue because it’s in all their branding.

My guess is that they're just not bothered about having a signature vehicle color, or might be waiting to see what self-selects as the most popular color? Or to borrow from racing traditions, maybe there's a color they keep entering into the Rebelle Rally and that's the one that is ubiquitous ... who knows.

Just for fun ?

I was playing with the color configurator and happened to screenshot halfway between the transition from Compass Yellow to Red Canyon. My wife will hate me but I think I love it? Can we can one of the other colors and make this an option? ?

I would pay for that color

I’d vote for team orange. ?

Never lose it in a parking lot and valet always keeps it up front with the ’nice’ cars.

Hoping the yellow turns out nicely...

Rivian SHOULD offer CarPlay, but clearly they are deciding to go their own way.
