Profits will not necessarily be what investors are looking at. There will be no profits for several years as a startup. What investors will be looking at is performance based on projections and previous results. If RJ said the first R1S shipments have been made (which he did say), then investors will start to question why only a handful of R1S deliveries have happened in Q1! The projection of completing LE preorders by end of 2022 will be questioned when only a few thousand R1Ts have been delivered through Q1. Even if Rivian actually meets its delivery goals, then investors will start looking at the other items which Rivian used as sources of revenue (subscriptions, RAN, etc.) when selling their IPO.
And exactly how does this affect a company who has already issued their IPO and collected their $13B (assuming you can't prove that what they said in their IPO was actually fraud vs. inability to execute against the plan)

Q2 means nothing in the long term success of Rivian - to call it make or break is a stretch of astronomical proportions.

I think "make or break" is an expression, not a technical accounting assessment. : )
The context was $RIVN, not Rivian. If Rivian management doesn't get their investor communications act together, $RIVN could be doomed to going sideways like other auto maker stocks and not experience the irrational exuberance that values Tesla as if it already makes 100% of all cars built by all car makers. (I base that on $TSLA when it was above a trillion dollars being about the sum of the ten largest car maker stocks in market cap.)

Rivian has $20B to burn through and contracts to build 100,000 vans … it's a 2025 thru 2030 moonshot and at $70, has to justify only a humble $70B (ish) market cap. Once they spend $5B on the Georgia plant and get it up to speed (2024?) we'll see how the EV market looks (it won't resemble 2022.) Maybe GM and Ford succeed, too. EVs are a 5% niche which is destined by government mandate to become 80% (or more) of the global auto industry by some date (that will continue to move around, but I think the competitors to Tesla are anxious to bring product to market and not be left behind.)

I think the shift to electric will be the demise of some marques which used to be thought of as permanent. I don't mean a sub-brand like Buick or Escalade just going out of production while GM fiddles, I'm wondering if some of the laggards like BMW or Honda will make or break.

From what we know about Rivian and its investors (supply of capital being the primary success factor in any business) I think anyone buying $RIVN today (between $50 and $70 in the last week) has a five or ten year prospect of seeing tenfold gains.

The video is interesting marketing roll but aside from everyday average driving and towing segments, how meaningful is it? Just because it can I suppose.

The most interesting part of the video is the power/torque distribution to the each wheel on the upper right hand corner. It shows how the power management changes with the driving mode.

The video might have been more meaningful if it showed how the truck handling can be changed/improved with heavily loaded bed (cg shift to the rear and higher), or showing adverse weather conditions or how driver+ interacts with these settings.

Then again, if you're buying this truck to go racing somewhere in a yet to be started EV truck race circuit, then great....

I hope that display is on the instrument panel – I wonder if it's just something for that video taken from their R&D.

I had given up being able to actually see a product before having to fork over 80k, but now I think my best chance of seeing a R1T/S sometime in the next year is by setting up the perfect marketing video opportunity! I bet if I financed it myself they might even let me see the full selection of paint swatches. Anyone have any good ideas for the greater Atlanta area?

. There's a reason you can't call up Windows customer service and ask them about undisclosed vulnerabilities. (Or rather, that you shouldn't expect them to tell you.)
they call me all the time about vulnerabilities and I don’t even have a windows PC ?

Just realizing that you all are talking about FY Q4, not FY Q2, right? [2/1/22] Rivian Sets Date for Release of Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2021 Results

Come on, man, can't something just be fun? There are plenty of people (like me) who like watching vehicles being driven to the edge of their performance envelope. It doesn't need to be freighted with real world consequence. It's a sizzle reel. It's fun. Lighten up a bit.
