RVT is a lot lighter than the Unimog U500 I owned. Size is relative to other vehicles and use case.

Rivian is likely less efficient than full size pickup EVs on a volume basis. Using a Rivian as a daily driver is operating one of the least efficient EVs that can be comfortably driven around town.
I don't see to many people driving around in Unimogs no sense in comparing the two.

It's the most efficient EV (or ICE) truck currently available in relation to what it is currently being compared to.
There are no shortage of people using full size trucks as daily drivers.

Who wants a 2023 $100K mid size pickup with a $10K near worthless option? Nows your chance.

Rivian doesn't often make obviously avoidable errors. But their solution to delivering on max pack is certainly one. R!T max pack is priced similarly as the Silverado EV RST with 220+ kwh battery.

The poor value may be more acceptable on the R1S as I assume pickup buyers are more sensitive about value for utility. I assume all R1S buyers are soccer moms at heart :) (I don't really mean the smiley face)
What does this have to do with the title of your thread (Infinite Max Pack Inventory)?

Schadenfreude

I was an original max pack reservation holder.

The quality of this post is even lower than I originally thought, then.

Attaching significant feelings to an object that you didn't design or build, or a company that you don't contribute to, is not what fully formed adults do.

I'm pretty happy having the Max pack. I frequently go on longer trips and often, the extra 40 miles make the difference between a one or two stopper. In this case, I say if you can spare the extra change, go for it. Also remember that charging time per mile is reduced, making most stops quicker. But also agree, Max doesn't make sense for mostly local driving
Yep! Better to have the extra juice and not need it than to need it and not have it available.

$10k for a real world 30 more miles is silly in my opinion. There have been several real world tests with the max pack and last one I watched said the max pack added range came out to $450 per extra mile you get. For some maybe, but not for me….

The RVT allows for owning a very large battery without being a jerk with a Hummer
Please explain how you are a jerk with a Hummer EV & not the RST? Are you a jerk with a CT with the range extender or say a Unimog driver?
So you have a RST on order?
Admittedly I would find a 3WT with a mid-gate somewhat appealing.

As a soccer mom at heart, who wants to buy GMC or Cypertruck or for that matter any truck that is as good looking and capable as Rivian.

I know your heart is on Silverado EV. So sorry about that /s

but who actually wants to drive a GMC Ultium Silverado....?

go read the Lyric forums and all their issues

Edit: larger battery ≠ better
If you tow frequently like I do, 6000lbs boat, Silverado with 200+ kWh is a fantastic deal at its price point. But it’s mammoth weight gives me a pause. Battery weight needs to come down if consumers are to be fully ready for EV adoption. 9000 lbs trucks and 6000 lbs passenger cars are not good solutions.

I don't see weight coming down significantly any time soon. The state of the art would be battery storage for aircraft. But the vehicle/energy storage side of the business is cost driven, as the new cell type, LFP, is lower energy density.

Rivian using higher energy density cells for max pack seems unusual or even unique. I doubt significant energy density with NMC chemistries will be available any time soon.

A 7000lb vehicle as a daily driver is also arguably excessive.

The R1T MP demand would have improved if they actually came out with a real MP at a fair up-charge.
Many truck buyers need the KW, hopefully this happens sometime after the pre-order holders have been cleared out.
Exactly. I was an original Max Pack preorder holder. When Rivian dropped Max on the quad as an option I bailed and got a Quad+Large and have been happy with it. Once reviews came out and it was made clear it was *only* an 11 kWh bump above Large pack I was really glad I didn't bother...$10k for that was not worth it at all. The original max pack was supposed to be 180 kWh with 3 added 15 kWh modules over the base 9 modules. R1T has space in the frame for 2 more modules, where R1S didn't. Rivian's choice was originally to only offer max pack on the R1T and *not* the R1S as a result. Instead, they offered a very modest capacity increase in the form of a chemistry change to keep a 9 module pack with roughly 15.8 kWh usable each. Now, add those extra 2 modules to the R1T and with the chemistry change you'd have a 180 kWh gross pack with nearly 174 kWh usable, which I gladly would've spent an extra $10k on for extra range while towing. Rivian will likely still do this at some point, especially with GM's offerings, but it would've meant a redesign of the battery pack enclosure and likely the cooling system that they couldn't afford at the time.

I can understand the economics/payload & weight concerns behind not offering the 11 module pack at the time. Chevy's 3wt is good for towing/payload but the unladen efficiency is lacklustre. I would much prefer the Rivian package with similar towing range which always comes down to kwh capacity. The over landers would buy in as well at a fair price ($1000kwh/($1500kwh/Ca)is outlandish)
