So I have had Sirius since it launched in 2002. Had it in my Tesla that I got rid of when I picked up my R1S. While I can play Sirius via the app/bluetooth the experience sucks because I can’t really channel surf without becoming a highly distracted driver.
I’m a huge music nut but I also get news etc from the satellites. Anyone have strong feelings about not having access to Sirius straight from the car? Anybody heard of an update that Rivian may add this service???

Perhaps we can all band together and put some pressure on the tech folks at Rivian to make this happen???

As a former satellite radio subscriber, I saw the appeal vs. terrestrial radio in the better sound, consistent content while on road trips, and more variety that satellite gave me. But now, basically all of those have been eclipsed by streaming services.

News may be slightly clunkier as the broadcasts are released as podcasts a few times a day, but it may be a worthwhile tradeoff. (I hate listening to the news.)

If you are determined to have a better SXM experience now, you could look to a dashboard phone mount. Just having the interface on the screen won't really keep you from being distracted.

It's also important to make sure that the OP understands that there's not a satellite receiver built into the Rivian (which, for a "get away from cell towers" vehicle astounds me) and that Sirius will be executed via streaming. You'll just have a nice pretty screen with your favorite channels as big buttons.

Most likely will be included in the Sep/Oct update. But as has been pointed out, it will not be "satellite" radio - our Rivians don't have a satellite antenna built in. It will be via an app built into the UI that uses the Rivian LTE connection just like your SXM phone app does.

Actual Satellite radio can't happen in the current Gen 1 and Gen2 Rivian vehicles as they lack a satellite antenna and they lack a satellite receiver. Only way to get in our vehicles (other than add on kits from SXM) is run the SXM app on your phone, or if/when Rivian decides to eventually add it as a native app like Tunein, etc..

You could use a SiriusXM car kit. I have been a subscriber since 2007. I have a lifetime subscription I bought pre-merger with Sirius (came from the XM side). I love it. The sound quality is compressed but I love the genre radio stations, comedy shows, and business news. We do go out skiing and other out of range areas and listening the my shows is great. In the middle of nowhere, dont see another vehicle on the road often, but you have the tunes and variety.

This kit uses satellite. Not as elegant as in-dash but Rivian doesnt have the hardware and if they were going to add it, they would have for gen 2. Very short-sighted in my opinion. They have time for R2 and R3, but if they want to cost save I doubt they want another SKU for the media station and UX software. I wouldnt count on it. The below also gives you a larger screen than the phone and physical nobs which are way easier to use and NOT be a distracted driver than yet another screen.

I do like the look of the Rivian but do wish it had a few buttons. They could have made it look rugged, maybe some old school avionics based flip switches for terrain control, accessory lighting, driving dynamics. Would have been cool.

I have added the SXM FM adapter car kit to both R1T’s I have owned and been pleasantly surprised by the performance. Not a perfect solution but acceptable. The first vehicle had the under dash timed power outlet, the second did not. Installation in the second was more difficult needing to run power from the driver’s side fuse box which would time out when the vehicle was “off.”

Satellite-based service is outdated and dead. You can fix the distraction problem with a dash phone mount, so it's no different from using an actual XM radio unit or the car display. This is how I manage music and podcasts also.

It's far from outdated and dead if travel in places without quality data signal. It's still the thing I miss most from my previous vehicle audio systems.

It's dead in the sense that it makes no economic sense and doesn't have a future. Don't their apps have the ability to preload shows or content for use offline, like the music and podcast apps?

I, too, have been a long time subscriber since they were launched in 2002. I was also lucky when I took advantage of the lifetime subscription they offered when they were trying to raise cash for the XM merger. I don't really miss it in my truck (Spotify works fine for me). One of the reasons I don't miss it is it isn't near the same service it used to be. It all started when they dropped "The Loft" station (technically moved it to online only, which required more money), but soon started allocating all these "single artist" stations, making individual arrangements with them to avoid paying the greater royalties in the general/themed stations, I assumed. Even though I like many of the artists, I don't like listening on and on to the same old hits. "The Loft" was extremely eclectic, like my tastes. Spotify really doesn't know what to do with my spectrum, hasn't completely caught up with me yet (there is some pigeon holing going on with their algorithm) but the more different stuff I "like" the better it becomes. Times change. Sirius has run its course with me. Small bit of irony. I sold all my Sirius stock and bought my Rivian stock with the proceeds. And we still listen to Sirius at the house. A lifetime subscription has its benefits, after all.

The benefit of Sirius/XM is it's programmed content and you can just turn it on anywhere with a clear view of their satellite - no pre planning or downloading required.

I fully understand how it works and used to have it.

Dead tech in modern cars.
