After reading about subscription concerns with the new SiriusXM App, I thought I'd share my experience. I'm very fortunate in that about 30 years ago, XM Radio was trying to raise capital. They offered lifetime accounts. I got three of them - one for each car we had. (We've saved a lot.)

When the Rivian SiriusXM App became available, I called XM and it was clear that they were not up to speed on handling the streaming car app. At first I was told that I could not transfer my lifetime account from my old car to my new Rivian. Then it was unclear as to how much a new subscription would cost. Paying $20 per month when most of their subscriptions offered free streaming seemed silly. I could just stream from the XM app on my phone at no cost. They finally seemed to settle on $9 per month, their normal streaming account charge, while they figured out if they could transfer my lifetime subscription. As they were processing that, the agent was notified that my lifetime account could be transferred to the Rivian.

So, I suggest a bit of patience. And I suggest that you call and talk to an SiriusXM agent rather than just accept what you can find online. You may be able to transfer an existing account to your Rivian -- or get a cheaper streaming account.

I dropped Sirius about 6 years ago because of how they wanted to handle transferring my current subscription to a new vehicle.

The long story — I had been a customer for many years. I don’t remember the exact plan, but was paying $100/year - a fair price I thought. I bought a new vehicle and called Sirius to transfer the subscription to the new car. The agent said “no problem” and then said that I would be charged $265. I said that was crazy, how can you charge me that to transfer an existing subscription. The agent replied that I must buy a new subscription for the new vehicle and they would transfer the remain subscription to the new vehicle. The annual renewal would then be $265/year. They would not let me keep the existing plan. I asked to be transferred to someone who could work with me on the pricing. Again, I was told the same thing.

I cancelled my subscription right then and had a refund check for the remaining time on my old subscription in less than 2 weeks.

I’ll never go back to them, Comcast, or any other service that plays those pricing games.

Why is Rivian using hot spot connectivity/streaming rather than satellite delivery for Sirius XM?

Because the trucks lack satellite hardware. But that's kind of inexcusable for an adventure vehicle that some of us semi-frequently take to areas without cell service.

I was able to transfer my lifetime platinum subscription from a radio in the house that I rarely use to my Rivian. The fee was $35. Interestingly, the XM rep said they were having problems transferring subscriptions to Teslas, but Rivians seem to be working fine.
