Hi, I brought in my Rivian lately for steering wheel vibration complaint.

Rivian said it’s a fairly common customer complaint. They replaced my steering wheel with a heavier wheel and they said it would greatly mitigate the vibrations.

Let’s see how it performs!

Interesting fix. Does make sense I guess if other causes were ruled out.

Interesting. First time I've heard that. I wish they could do that for the hood. All the glue fixes still haven't taken care of the buffeting in the wind. It's not a huge deal, but just makes it feel a little cheap when you notice it.

Are they using the heavier wheel on new builds. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not an automotive engineer but this doesn't really seem like a legit fix to me. My wheel has zero shake at speed, so in order for a heavier wheel to be the solution to the problem I need to already have the heavier wheel. Otherwise why is mine perfect in this regard with yours having an issue?

Seems like a tolerance issue with suspension parts that the wheel is being band aided over. I hope this fixes it but something doesn't seem right here to me.

I dropped my vehicle off at the service center yesterday for the now 5th time regarding steering wheel vibration issues.

They told me that they are working on a heavier steering wheel but they have no word on when it would be available.

It's interesting that you've already gotten this heavier steering wheel installed. Did it make a difference? Would you care to show a screenshot from your work order? I'd love to be able to show this to the service center because they think this part is not yet available for production.

With the new steering wheel, vibration has been dampened a lot. I never expected zero vibrations and actually want some feedback to come through.

It feels like my old MYP’s steering on the “easy” steering effort mode. No complaints at all!

That said, I think I noticed more improvement on the vibrations when I got “road force balancing” done on all the tires at America’s Tires. It seems like these Pirelli tires are sensitive. Not Rivian’s fault; just how these tires are made I guess.

But does the heating work any better in it? Or is the "heated steering wheel" still a "lukewarm steering wheel"? ?
It's 110F every day here. So when I get in, yeah the steering wheel is hot AF ?

Ask me again in 5 months...

thank you for sharing! Does the replacement help with improve the steering feel as well? My wife has complained about a shaky wheel and “loose steering” (neither of which I’ve experienced), but may be interested in this swap to see if it helps her. She loooves the way our old Model 3 drives and said if the R1S drove similarly she’d like it so much more.

they reglued mine and it’s solid now so, whatever they did to mine they didn’t do the exact same thing to yours

I suppose one could mount a kettle ball to DIY. FWIW like you, my early 2022 (R1S) has no steering wheel vibes.

If you're saying that all "normal/light" steering wheels would have this problem if it was an issue with the weight of the steering wheel-I absolutely agree. Egad, something is amiss Watson!
