It works great. I leave the phone behind often, and this app is a great backup in case iPhone battery dies.

It works great when it does. But some are unable to get it to pair to the vehicle.
I agree using the Apple Watch Ultra as key (bluetooth, not internet/wifi) is a tremendously great feature. I had previously purchased "Watch App for Tesla" and had 50/50 success with the linked WAAK app for Rivian (Gen1). As an active runner and general outdoors enthusiast, the ability to roam about in areas without internet/cell access (including city locations such as parking garages), leave your phone behind, and not worry about remembering to take a physical fob/card with you is really, really nice. With the Rivian being an "adventure vehicle," I'm really bummed that Rivan hasn't rolled this out yet.

it doesn’t affect the battery much at all. It can stay open in the back ground or if you use it sparingly, just bring it up when you need it.

Same reason we don't have a dozen other Tesla capabilities, most of which are more important than this. Overall software maturity and the time/funding it takes to keep adding features.

The full answer is long and complicated. Phone as a key, and the third party app for Watch as a key, use Bluetooth. There are limitations and issues with that, especially with having passive lock/unlock on a Watch. The new tech uses UWB and a native Apple device-as-key service that fixes all of those issues. I want my Watch just as backup, so I don't WANT it to do passive, at all, and it works fine for me as a key.

I, too, would love to be able to use my Apple Watch Ultra, with cellular capability, as a key. I used to have to take my iPhone, if I wanted to listen to music. Now, with Apple Music access, having the phone in my possession is mostly not necessary. As it is, I often leave my phone at home and just use the fob, which I always carry. I can always get calls on my watch. I’ve found this works very well, but a true WAAK would be even better. Unfortunately, I suspect that is not going to happen for Gen 1 rigs.

Did you miss the part where it's available with a third party app? Rivian said definitely not with a native Rivian app.
