Just got back from a trip from NorCal to SoCal and back. Had a chance to use the A2Z adapter at several Tesla supercharger sites in both NorCal and SoCal. It worked great!

Until yesterday, I would pull right up to a tesla charger, connect and within 20-30 seconds I was charging. The Plug & Charge feature connected and started charging as fast as a RAN charger.

However, yesterday I pulled into to a Tesla Supercharger site and when I connected to the charger I just got a spinning “STARING…” status on the dash and it would not start charging.

After a second try I decided there must be something wrong with the charger and moved one charger over and tried to again. Same thing, just “STARTING…” but nothing would ever happen.

Finally, I started up the Tesla app, entered my credit card, initiated the charge from the Tesla App, and then plugged in to the charger. The truck started charging immediately.

So, for everyone getting their A2Z adapters this week, make sure you have your Tesla App ready to go just in case the Plug & Charge is not working.

That’s weird.

I used a magic dock location yesterday and just plugged and charged, no apps needed. So slick.

Might be a back end communication glitch. Would have been interesting to see if soft reset would have made any difference.

Same here. I got the same issue these two days. Need to use the Tesla App to start the charging session. It looks like Rivian not allow using a 3rd party adapter in Tesla Supercharger.

Many people have insisted that it would be impossible for Rivian/Tesla to detect which adapter you are using.

But Rivian definitely knows who they have sent an adapter to. So perhaps Rivian is not enabling plug and charge at adapter required sites until they send you an adapter.

I am currently in a road trip from NorCal to SoCal. Everything worked fine 2 days ago. We are moving on today so I will post back with any success or issues. Hopefully just a communication issue between Rivian and Tesla considering access is still allowed through the Tesla app at non-magic dock locations.

Rivian and Tesla can’t tell which adapter is used because the adapters are “dumb” and do not communicate. It is a pass through device. Surely they could assume someone is using a 3rd party adapter if you are being charged through the Rivian app and shut it off there until they send you an adapter. Sucks for Ford owners who have a Rivian as well…and are using the adapter Ford gave them…….like me?.

Still working just now with an A2Z adapter using plug and charge. Even with an almost full battery (prepping for a long trip). Hopefully just a minor glitch in the matrix.

No. It’s the backend comms for handshaking and billing. Like how EA would fail to initiate charging when you have no or insufficient funds added to your account. It’s just an adapter with no ID.

Rivian says: "Only Rivian-provided NACS DC adapters are authorized"

Unless Rivian gave you that Ford adapter then using the Ford adapter on your Rivian is a violation of Rivian's rules just as much as using an A2Z adapter.

Even if the Rivian adapter ends up being identical to the Ford adapter, the one Ford gave you is not "Rivian-provided".

Charging and adapters is so confusing. Even though I charge at home, there will be a time when I’m traveling that I will need to use a public charger. Is there a chart that depicts the options?

Not really. Its pretty simple.

Your vehicle has a CCS port. The only chargers you'll need an adapter with for high speed charging, is Tesla, and that will be provided from Rivian, or you can purchase one from someone like a2z.

They are still processing orders from the week before that. I’m a March 18th order (of over 2000) and still waiting for a tracking #. They hope to ship mine this week.
