I’m looking forward to more charging options while traveling hither and yon. I was very excited when Elon opened the Tesla V3 network but was disappointed when I found that older V2 Superchargers were not accessible as of yet - such as in West Yellowstone which is a DC desert for non-Tesla.

I was going to ask Tesla if and when these older chargers may be open to Rivian but their information access is not user friendly.

I’m not sure if it’s a hardware or software issue that may or may not be updated but any insight for future access would be appreciated.

It seems to be hardware related where the older stations are not NACS compatible and communicate with a proprietary connection.

Additional note, not all V3 stations are open either.

Its hardware. Last year I ran into a Tesla tech at a V3 installation near me that was only a few months old. He was upgraded hardware to allow non-Tesla charging. That station is on the NACS list.

V2 lacks the hardware for CCS communication and there is apparently not a path for upgrade, so don'te expect them to ever be compatible with the adapters.

At the moment, Tesla's MO is to install new V3 or V4 stations instead of replacing existing V2 units. Sometimes they will add V3 or V4 dispensers/cabinets to existing V2 locations. They block adapter access in some or all of those mixed locations, though.

I really hope Tesla plans to replace the V2 chargers because it's left a bunch of big holes.

If there’s one thing Tesla is not good at, it’s communication. No one really knows.

I suspect they’ll do some combination of replace + add stations in places like Wyoming and South Dakota, because the charging maps there are terrible. It should be easy to financially justify given what they charge for electricity.

V2 (and V1) used a modified CCS Combo 1 (SAE DCFC) protocol which only Tesla vehicles can understand. They "could" be modified to change their protocol via firmware but they are only 120-150kW and in shared pairs (A/B), which is not ideal for opening up to other OEMs.

To complicate things a little further, Tesla has "Urban Chargers" which technically is a DC Supercharger but it's limited down to 72kW, and they are only for Teslas with no plans to open them up to other OEMs.

It's CAN based like CHAdeMO, not powerline ethernet like CCS.
