Sounds like mainly a "you" problem to me. Do you always blindly follow whatever a computer tells you to do? A little critical thinking would do wonders here. A tool is only as good as the person using it.

Pretty sure Google does not ask you to get off the interstate in downtown Atlanta & make an illegal u-turn & get right back on to the interstate (pic 1) or ask you to make an illegal left turn at intersection that clearly indicates the lane I'm in must go straight (pic)

The navigation system first of all does not show options on the map like the TEsla does. It doesn't give any specific info. about the chargers, it just says if you want fast chargers or available chargers but you are blind as to what you will be getting until you get there.
what are you talking about? you can filter for several things like to show chargers from specific networks: ChargePoint, Rivian, EVGo, Tesla and the power output they provide. Then the map will adjust to show only those.

I've had both GoOgLe and Apple Maps tell me to do a U Turn where it was illegal.

"The worst there is" is definitely a stretch. For my uses cases/locations, Rivian's system needs improvement, but I have had better results with Rivian than Waze. I have had Waze tell me to get off an Interstate, take a side road for 2 miles, and get back on the Interstate. More than once. No traffic alerts in the bypassed segement.

The only I've ever owned that is close to this bad was in our Lexus 450h. Blaming it on the user is ridiculous. All we are supposed to do is enter the destination. Assuming that is done correctly it shouldn't suddenly tell me to get off I-35 and head 25 miles west when my destination is 30 miles SE. ??. I don't use it any more. My phone is good enough. Some items are Ford Focus quality and the nav is one. But we all know Rivians are not a luxury vehicle (just because they cost $90,000) so not everything should be expected to work. We got that straight in a different thread???.

The problem I have with setting a charger destination in the Rivian nav screen is that it automatically does battery preconditioning which reduces range (probably not by much).

The navigation still needs some major upgrades before I will use it over google maps+ABRP
Unless you're planning charge stops that you'll arrive with less than 2% battery, you should be fine. It uses more power, but it charges *MUCH* faster when preconditioned. On my recent towing road trip I only set "not the charger" as a destination once to avoid preconditioning, one where I did expect to arrive with less than 2% remaining. (I also slowed down to 45 in a 55 zone, which then helped enough that I could set the charger as destination again about 30 miles away, knowing I'd make it with charge to spare.)

I suspected as much, I just would rather not have to keep one more thing in my head when I hit destination in a navigation app. I know they are trying to make everything easier and push button like but it isn't working (metaphorically) for me.

I agree 100% the Nav is really bad with taking strange routes that don't make sense, wanting to charge all the time even when I lowered the threshold, changing chargers mid trip randomly, and having to back out of a trip so you can add or change the charger it wants to use.

Now I will say I don't think it is worse than other built in nav systems. It is worse than Google and Waze and any vehicle that has AA/CP. They need to improve it drastically to really be competitive because I specifically purchased cars with AA until the Rivian.

You can also include incorrect speed limits and incorrect traffic reports to the list.

I have driven 100,000 miles with Google Maps compared to the 6,000 I've driven in the Rivian and it is so much worse it is noticeable. The fact I need charging doesn't help compared to any gas station along the highway but still it needs to be better.

I've said this before but I'm not calling for AA/CP but they need to improve the navigation to be somewhat comparable so I'm not running maps or having my wife confirm a route that seems way off or the charger is actually working.

I have a little bit of a different view point. Absolutely nothing is perfect - except for maybe Pamela Anderson in the early 90's - so you pick the vehicle that works best for what you need.

I prefer a vehicle that has feel and is confident on the road. Both my cars feel that way, but both have less than to be desired user interfaces. I am cool with that. For me the way the vehicle handles, drives, and cruises is much more important than GPS, or a user interface. Between the car, my phone, and a little pre-planning I know I will get to where I need to get to.

The trade off is getting a Tesla since they are recognized to have the best user interface in the business. But, Tesla's drive like complete garbage. I have owned multiple Models S' and Model X's. Sure, they will get me to a Tesla supercharger like nobody's business, but the driving experience will be sterile and not compare to the two EVs I have now.

Cars are a compromise. You want your car to look and work as well as your Mac? Get a Tesla. You want a car that has feel and road connectivity, then stay away from a Tesla. At the end of the day you just have to choose what is more important to you.

I live in Atlanta and driving illegally is impossible as long as you remember it's "my turn" The highways are mine, the merge is mine and if I feel like a left from the right lane or right from the left, it's my turn and you will wait. No police are around and everything goes, from stop signs and light being a suggestion to using your horn a sign of respect. Rivian navigation has Atlanta figured out perfectly.

On road trips I drive using both the Rivian nav and Google Maps (via my phone on a phone mount).

The comparison has been roughly:

20% of the time Rivian nav is better
10% of the time Google Maps is better
70% of the time they are the same

So I don't get all this vitriol towards the nav. No navigation system out there is perfect and Rivian outperforms Google Maps in my experience.

Maybe we should have a "give me your funniest nav story". So Im up in Napa, the winery is off a right turn off the highway, but the Riv has me routed to go down a mile or 2, turn around then then take a left on a busy highway.
